Pinel/'s triple spate imperials
second straight league win
EXETER - Back-to-back wins
last week for the Exeter Chrysler
imperials have seen them improve
on their South Perth Men's Fasthall
League record to 6-10.
Thursday night, the Imperials
came -from -behind to edge the visit-
ing Shakespeare Sox 12-11. Two
nights earlier Dan Heywood
pitched a no-hitter over a 1-0 seven
inning game against host Milverton
Magnums.
Against the Sox, Exeter got on_
the board early with a per of runs
in the bottom of the first as Kevin
Lightfoot singled, scored on a base
hit by Heywood and then a Kevin
Windsor hit drove in Heywood.
in the third, Windsor and Sandy
Hyde walked and .then, with two
out, starting pitcher Jeremy Mason
Tined a double down the left field
line to score two more runs.
Catcher Gavin Snell, who went
3 -for -4 plus a sacrifice, singled in
the fourth and scored on Rod John-
ston's double. A Heywood fly ball
scored Johnston.
Pitching strong in
Tara tournament
TARA - While pitching has been a point of concern for the Exeter
Chrysler Imperials this year, that wasn't the case at a toumament in Tara
over the weekend.
In the three games they played, the Imperials only gave up three runs per
game.
Jeremy Mason started in the 3-2 opening win over Owen Sound Miller's
Garage in a game which saw Exeter win in extra innings. The tournament
games go seven innings and in the eighth Bob Cornish scored the winning
run.
Rod Johnston and Sandy Hyde each had a pair of hits. Hyde launced a
second inning rbi triple but, with none out, was left stranded.
In the second game, St. Jacob's pitcher Brent Brohman struck out nine as
Hyde's two singles,, a Graham Nesbitt base hit and a Darren Neil triple
were the only Exeter hits.
• Steve Cook started in the 3-0 loss and gave way to Doug Leonhardt.
The third game was a close 3-2 loss to Pt. Elgin as Mike Neil had a dou-
ble and a single and Nesbittconnected for a double.
The bottom of the fifth saw Dar-
ren Neil single, move to third on a
wild pitch and a passed ball and he
scored when the Sox were unsuc-
cessful in their attempt to stop
Hyde from stealing second.
Shakespeare, who scored two
runs in the second and three in the
third, got to relief pitcher Mike
Neil for three hits and four runs in
the top of the sixth.
The highly offensive game con-
tinued in the bottom of the sixth
when Johnston walked, moved to
second on a wild pitch and scored
on Windsor's second rbi single of
the game.
Snell stepped to the plate in the
bottom of the seventh and his hit
along with four' Exeter walks tied
the score. in the top of the eighth,
the Sox got a run back to. go up 11-
10 following a couple of Imperials
errors.
The winning run came in the bot-
tom of the eighth when Hyde and
Derek Cooper 'each had base hits
and then Snell crushed a triple to
deep centre field to score the tieing
and winning runs.
Defensively, Heywood came on
in relief of Mike Neil and struck
out five of the nine batters he faced.
No hitter:—Last Tuesday night
in Milverton, in a seven -inning
game against the Magnums, Hey-
wood struck out six and gave up
just two runs. The lone run in the
game came in the top of the second
frame when Hyde hit a home run.
The Imperials host Sebringville
Navy on Thursday at 9 p.m.
