Ceili -House debuts at Blyth Festival By Erin Lobb T -A Stuff BLYTH - Colleen Curran is no newcomer to the. Blyth stage but her most recent creation, Celli House, made it's premiere debut at the Festival Theatre last Friday night as Blyth's season opener. Ceili House is a light comedy that features a cast of eccentric characters that proceed to divert the attentionsofFreya Brady, a cura- tor, hired toopen a new literary museum. Curran covering all the m►gles by including a meddlingso- ciente, a self professed druid, arro- gant businessman, and opera sing- ing gardner. This play is indeed in true Curran style, and all those who enjoyed Curran's previous plays, Cake Walk, and Local Talent will most likely enjoy this production as well. Set and Costume Designer, Ste- phen Dengenstein, has created an impressive set, complete with topi- aries, that takes the audience into the world of Rebecca Coburn, a supposedly famous Canadian au- thor from the late 1920's. As the gardner, Michael McMa- nus gave a strong performance but is puzzling as to his character's mo- tives and reasonin are never !catty clear. Curran only skims the sur- face of this "mystery man" that Seem s to have an interesting past tidal the audience is :left wondering about. Laurel Paetz's Freya Brady, a.k.a Diane Chambers, plays the re- served curator who finds herself in more than one kettle of Fish as the play progresses. Paetz however, is always a pleasure as her charm and charisma is apparent. Kevin Bundy's Christopher Stra- chan is a delight as he proceeds to set your teeth on edge with his -por- trayal of the "typical" shady busi- nessman. His perfectly timed en- trances provid;, good laughs as he attempts to woo the unsuspecting Freya. Claire Crawford epitomizes the ultimate in upper class snobbery with her portrayal of Clare Barba- zon. Sheris.quiek to judge, and just as quick to speak her mind•as She says, "Could have been a principal if she hadn't gone •into her white wrltch,,drunketadruidiltase," in ref- erence to Anile Anglin's character Dymphna Ni Murchu. Nevert tir- ing is her patting humor 'or her painfully coordinated outfits. Hardly the only oddity of the cast, Dymphna Ni Murchu is played with a perfect irish accent which helps relate the theme of the Ceili House back to the play. She attempts to revive . the Ceili spirit once present in the old house. As always, Anne Anglin is almost bursting with energy as she gives another impressive performance. Curran seems to jumble too many themes in to one piece as she touch- es on prejudice, environmentalism, a love triangle, a moral debate, elite versus poor, bilingualism, and also throws in a bit of history for good measure. The. quick.,pace of the last act of - the play snakes ,up ,for the ,torn- i what slow pace of the fust act. by incorporating a passionate kiss and a choreographed fight scene. Di- rector Patricia Vanstone makes great use of the stage levels and area during this time. Celli House will run from June 22 to September 11 in both evening and matinee performances. • 3 bedroom bungalow • full basement • forced air gas fumace • oak kitchen • maintenance free exterior Call Roger Dougall 2 • Air exchanger/ventilator • single car garage • main floor laundry • located on private court • occupancy late June 54.281 evening 235-0448 Custom Round Baling 4 ft. wide by 3-6 ft. high A Fair of the Heart was brought to Exeter last Wednesday. The Huron County Health Unit and the Heart and Stroke Foun- dation set up their tri (ling display at the Exeter Library Square to increase public awareness about pear( health. Here public health nurse Anne Haley (left) demonstrates to Jenny Willis and Janet Peterson how to measure the carbon monoxide content of the blood, much of which comes from smoking or second hand smoke. The display also included in- formation on blood pressure, .exercise, and better eating.
