Waste management
Bringing nature to IIfe
By Paula Helmer
EXETER - As people are be-
coming increasingly aware of the
need for participation in Exeter's
waste management program,
composter sales have gone up
dramatically. Composting is a
major part of the three R's. In fact
it contributes to all three. It reduc-
es the amount of waste going to
landfills, it allows you to reuse
the compost in your backyard,
and it recycles nutrients back into
the soil and plant life. It's amaz-
ing how much good comes out of
a pile of waste.
There are many misunderstand-
ings surrounding composting that
need to be cleared up such as: it
attracts rodents and other pests; it
produces a rank smell; it takes too
much work; organics do no harm
in the landfill.
Many households have com-
aposted for years and can tell you
that as long as you follow the ba -
rade guidelines that are available,
p ' lents should be minimal.
.e most important thing to re-
member is not to add meat or
dairy scraps to your compost
This will attract pests for sure.
After adding kitchen scraps, it is a
good idea to cover the pile with a
thin layer of finished compost or
soil from your garden. This adds
the needed organisms that help
decompose the organics and also
reduces any odour that may at-
tract animals.
When adding ingredients to the
pile, it is important to have a
good balance. Here's a simple
rule to follow .for composting: a
handful of ::dry, browns (dry
leaves, shredded. cardboard, :saw-
dust, etc.) goes with a handful -of
-greens (kitchen scraps, fresh
leaves. grass -clippings). Finished
compost has a plammt.emisa.
Foul smells occur only when
there is a lack of oxygen, if there
isn't a balance of brown and
greens, or if meat or dairy scraps
were added. Here is another hint
turn the pile occasionally to loos-
en the compost, thus increasing
the oxygen content helping to al-
leviate smells.
As with anything in life, com-
posing can be as complicated as
you make it. Reasons for com-
posting vary from person to per-
son. Many compost to stop organ-
ic waste from going to the landfill
or to have fresh compost for gar-
dens and lawns. It is incredible
how much detailed information
about composting is available, but
much of it is unncessai: Trying
new things can make composting
fun and interesting. However, if
you want an uncomplicated pile
remember these three things: 1. a
balance of 'brown and greens; 2.
keep it. -as =moist as a -damp
sponge; .3. keep it loose by=turn-
ing it about three times a -.month
for oxygen.
There is a misconception that
organic waste in the landfill site is
harmless. Organic matter reacts
with other waste to create toxic
leachate'rthat may contaminate
groundwater or nearby streams.
On :the other hand, it is known
:thatorganic waste actually bene-
fits the earth if composted. So,
why should we "waste" this valu-
able resource. -in a landfill?
The best thing about compost-
ing is .that it brings nature .t0
life...yoti can actually .see -last
week's leftovers turn into nutrient-
rich soil. Composting heaps .the

At about the same time, a vehicle
driven by Michael Hayter of Oedi-
