Hurondale WI tour mill
HURONDALE - The Hurondale Women's Institute met.at the•home of
Marilyn Pym for dessert, and afterwards toured the Hilton' Whole Grain
Millers, Ltd. of RR 2 Staffs, owned and operated by the Mahon family.
The Hilton Whole Grain Millers are processors of certified organic prod-
ucts such as oats grown according to strict standards - free of pesticides
and insecticides.
The best buys are natural foods where the essential nutrients placed in
them by mother nature remain unhampered and complete. Nothing is add-
ed to the oats and nothing taken away. Grins (oats) are processed through
the mill as small flaked toasted oats used in cereal and cookies; regular
flaked oats best for oatmeal; and large flaked oats used for granola.
Oatmeal packages are sold in our local stores - I.G.A., Stan Frayne's and
Valumart, Mitchell and St. Marys. There is a mail order service across
Canada and retails as 5 kg. for $9.50 in Ontario. A sample of oatmeal was
given to each Institute member.
Organic toasted spelt flakes are also refined there. Spelt is a healthyal-
ternative for wheat sensitive people and is easily assimilated by the human
digestive system.
The Hurondale Women's Institute members are invited to the Huron
South Women's Institute picnic, July 6 in Crediton. The next meeting is at
Marilyn Pym's cottage north of Bayfield.
Ten sutmner students hired
at Conservation Authority
EXETER - With provincial gov-
ernment funding, the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority
(ABCA) has been able to hire a
larger number of students this sum-
mer than in the past few years. Ten
summer positions have been 'fil ed,
covering three programs - the Envi-
ronmental Youth Corps (EYC). Ex-
. perience 1 and Experience 95.
The EYC program involves two
students, Anita Broers, from RR 1
Granton and Rob Passmore of RR 3
Exeter. They're involved with re-
sources inventory in the administra-
uon office at Morrison Dam. The
Experience 1 group is helping to
maintain and operate the ABCA's
conservation areas. They are Scott
MacGregor of Watford, Scot/
Amos of RR 2 Ailsa Craig, Craig
Lees of Parkhill and Michael Axt-
mann of Walton. The final collec-
non of summer students, in the Ex-
perience 95 program, consists of
Tanya Reymer of RR 3 Ltrcan,
Vanda Cardiff of RR 1 Lucan, Paul
Becker of Grand Bend and Pam
Gacksteuer of Hensall, who are
working on three different projects
as technical assistants.
The students have similar hopes
for their summer jobs with the
ABCA. All agree that tete experi-
10
t'
ence they will gain this summer
will be valuable assets when they
return to school or for future job
opportunities; as Paul Becker said,
--thisjob will -be -good for "broaden-
ing'my experience bast". This ex-
perience is quite valuable due to the
variety of duties for which each stu-
dent is responsible. This variety,
they feel, will prepare them for a
broader range of future occupa-
tions. Tanya Reymer feels that spe-
citic training in first aid and dealing
with hazardous materials will be a
great benefit.
Lastly the other major idea being
expressed by several of the students
is education on what the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority is
all about; as Michael Axtmann
said, "to see how the Conservation
Authority works" each day to pro-
tect the environment.
Anita Broers, who is here for her
second summer, feels that working
here will give her a greater under-
standing of the environmental field
which will be important to her stud-
ies in geography. Overall, the stu-
dents appear to be pleased with
their summer jobs and are looking
forward to the experience they will
gain as well as the education they
will receive.
