EXETER - It's been five years
since Jay Alblas ventured out and
published his first book. Since then
he has been honing his craft for the
second book, Tales From Across
The Spyder Bridge,which came out
One month ago.
Alblas describes the mood of the
new 100 -page book as dark with a
bit of humor. The 74 selections are
based on personal experiences and
observations over the past two
years.
Some of the selections were writ-
ten with the idea of being songs. "A
sort of free form of writing which
isn't considered poetry` by some
people," he said.
"This book is more coherent," Al -
blas said comparing it to his fust
selection of poetry, Stargazer.
There is a definite theme touched
on throughout the book. "It's not so
abstract that people won't under-
stand,' he said.
"The first book was broad and I
put a lot of emphasis on what the
readers would think."
He didn't worry about response as
much this time. •
Reaction has been positive to the
first book, so Alblas felt more com-
fortable experimenting a little this
time.
More attention was given to the
overall appearance of the book as
well as the content.
Alblas wanted a more classic lit-
erature look. His friend Brent Jes-
ney helped by providing a cover
photograph and some illustrations.
Friends, he said, made the whole
process possible.
His friend Amanda Fields gave
him .the title for the book, and his
former :highschool teacher, Glenda
Burnt encouraged Alblas to pur-
sue the idea of publishing.
While attending Smith Huron
District High School Alblas had
Burrell as a teacher in Grade 10.
"To have someone who doesn't
know you say •they like your
work...that really counts," he said
"I would have kept writing re-
gardless, but I don't think
have shown anyone."
Although he has been distributing
the books personally and by word
of mouth, they have been showing
up in some unusual places.
He found out in April that a fami-
ly member had taken a copy of
Stargazer to Woodstock and one of
his poems was used in a high
school play.
"They're going to send a tape of
the play?
Although people are reacting to
his writing, Alblas said he is not
I would
doing it for the recognition or prof-
it.
Instead he wants to have a perma-
nent record of his creative efforts.
"I would have to sell a lot of
books to make a profit."
It cost him $2,000 to have three
hundred books printed. He has sold
more than fifty and said he would
be pleased to sell another fifty
books.
"People who read it should find
something worthwhile", he saidy"It
wasn't written to impress or offend
anyone, rather to affect them."

St. Boniface wants
community input
ZURICH - St.Boniface Separate
School, along with the students,
parents, community members, and
local business, is currently in the
process of developing a new com-
mittee to improve the current status
of the school and it's policies.
Laurie Kraftcheck, principal at
St.Boniface, says three parents have
been selected to serve on a council
that will consist of three staff mem-
bers, the parish priest, and a busi-
ness community representative.
"The purpose of the committee is
to begin a decision making process
that begins with the community in-
stead of from the top down." says
Kraftcheck who's his role on the
committee will be to ensure deci-
sions being made don't conflict with
any education or infonnation acts.
The new committee will concen-
trate on the school's statement of di-
rection, and work on improving it.
"We want to make decisions that are
going to be effective for all in-
volved, students business, and
school.
A business representative has yet
to be chosen however, according to
Kraftcheck, once the group is orga-
nized it will be a growing experi-
ence for everyone.
