Fly bail caught by Nathan Malbrecht, and
It feels good to be a Habs fan
It's not always easy being a Montreal Canadiens fan, but it sure felt
good a couple of weeks ago.
Somehow the world seems to right itself a little whenever the Canadi-
ens win the Stanley Cup. Things are as they should be. It's particularly
fitting that they won it on the 100th anniversary of the Cup.
1 used to have a drawing on my wall when I was a kid :....
that showed the Stanley cup with a spite in it. A bucket,
with the Canadiens symbol on it, hung on the spite andr<<>::.<"'>?
the caption underneath said, 'As Canadian as maple syr -
up.
When I say. I'm a Habs fan, people often moan, groan,
roll their eyes, hold their noses, etc. People don't like
Montreal because they win too much, so they say.
Well, it's been seven years since they've won the Cup.
They weren't expected to win it this year. They have lots
of young players and no real superstars. After they got
game one of the fmal series out of their system, things
started to fall into place.
They worked hard and they worked together and that's
what won Montreal their 24th Stanley Cup.
A former employer of mine insists that Montreal has,
'horseshoes stuck where horseshoes oughtn't be stuck.'
They do seem to have some good luck thrown in now
and then.
hockey sweater of Cournoyer vintage, which I still wear, much to my
husband's disgust. The Seed is a Leaf fan, as you might know.
I've only been to one game at the Forum but what a game it was. They
beat Chicago 12 to 3 and Cournoyer got five goals that night. Imagine
him doing that on the night I happened to be there. More mystique.
I expect the happy marriage of a Leaf fan and a Habs fan
is a rare thing. This rivalry stems back to our days on the
school bus where we used to draw our respective team's
symbol in the condensation on the bus windows.
Little did I know that this Leaf -drawing character would
someday be married to me, and that his equally annoying
brothers would become my brother -in-laws.
We used to play pick up hockey at the arena in Huron
Park. One time after the Leafs had somehow managed to
beat Montreal, 1 ended up on the wrong end of that bet and
had to wear a Leaf sweater while we played. It was humili-
ating enough but then the Seed, who was just Cliff then,
decided he wanted a picture of this rare occasion.
So between him and two brothers I was forced into it.
Thank goodness, the picture turned out blurry. I do have a
picture of the Seed wearing a Montreal sweater though. It
might come in handy someday.
When Cliff and I were married, at our reception we were
-presented with hoc -key sweaters.—I-received a -Leaf one with -
my name on it and he a Montreal one withJtis name on it. I '
guess they were hoping we would Sei aside our differences for the sake
of the marriage.
The rivalry still exists, although it had somewhat mellowed. This year
it flared up again with Toronto playing so well. I even found myself
cheering for them a little, It would have been fun to have Toronto and
Montreal meet in the final.
I think the leafs would have given the Canadiens a better run for their
Toney than Los Angeles did. But there's no doubt who the winner
would have been, is there?

It's part of the Montreal mystique that Dick Lavine'
mentioned at the end of the finial game. This unexplainable Mystique
blends in with the fact that they are a dam good organization. They
seem to attract good management, good coaches and good players.
By the way, this former employer (actually that term is a bit too for-
mal so I'll call him my old boss, that suits him better) anyway, my old
boss was perhaps a bit irked when he said that because he had lost a bet
with me over the final series. It was all his idea.
Serves him right for picking a team from 'la -la land' to win over a Ca-
nadian team. I now look forward to being treated to a meal, courtesy of
my old boss.
I've been a Habs fan since I was in public school. I have a Montreal

EXETER - Yes, Ray Boprque
really does go through sevenlpairs
of gloves every game. .
Exeter native Dave Shaw was the
guest speaker at the Perth Huron
Life Underwriters Association
meeting and golf tournament Fri-
day morning and he had a lot of
praise for his fellow National
Hockey League defenseman of the
Boston Bruins.
"He's the hardest worker in prac-
tice, he plays half the game. He' sets
a standard," said Shaw who is no
home for a well deserved summer
rest.
But even a pro like Shaw has his
off nights in a season that starts in
early September and runs until late
April.
"I've had games this year where I
really wondered if I should be in
the league." '
He added it takes a lot to get to
the NHL and the two key ingre-
dients are motivation and dedica-
tion.
"You only get od'of it what you
put into it," said Shaw.
Boston Bruins defenseman and Exeter native Dave Shaw,
left; was the guest speaker at the Perth Huron Underwriters
Association and was greeted by president Larry Johns.
