season is here,
kw how to fight back
By Erin Lobb

EXETER - Whether it's pollen or
grass, trees or plants, seasonal aller-
gies are a problem for an estimated
5.5 million Canadians, and South
Huron area residents seem to be no
'exception.
An allergy is an unwelcome reac-
tion, by the body, to otherwise
harmless substances. A reaction of
.this type occurs when the body mis-
takes a substance (such as grass,
tree, orpiant pollens) for a harmful
:.invader, this causes the body to re-
lease a range of chemicals, the
most irritating of which is called
hinomme.
"Allergies are a science unto
themselves," says Dr. David Hod-
der, of Meter. "Most allergies are
related to :tbe..renwiroameat, .the
flowers on trees, that begin to bud
this time of year, release a pollen
that is very small, as do grasses
certain weeds. This is what most
people are allergic to."
Over the counter medications are
a common source of relief for most
sufferers. Pharmacist Emie Miatel-
lo of the Huron Apothecary recom-
.atonds an antihistamine such as
Claritin, Chlor-Tripolon, Seldane,
or Hismanal. Miatello also sug-
gests that you take the medication
before the allergy sets in, as it takes
time tohavean effect.
There is evidence that allergies
tend to run in families. According
to information received by the Hu-
ron County Health Unit, a child
with one allergic parent has a one-
in- four chance of developing alter-
, gies. But, as Dr. Hodder says, al-
Ilergies can be grown into and out
of.
For more acute cases of allergies,
`tests followed by a series oldesen-
sitization shots can be given/arttie-
viate the symptoms of the allergies.
However, seasonal discomforts
can be alleviated by taking a few
simple measures.
