it never was Canada's Wonder-
land:
The headline in the local paper
screamed that Canada's Wonder-
land is now America's Wonderland
because it is now 100 --percent
owned by Paramount Communica-
tions Inc., a New York -based en-
tertainment giant.
1 submit to you that it never was
Canada's.
It was built back in 1979.80 on
some of the best farmland in the
world, just a stone's throw from
the Holland Marsh, Canada's finest
vegetable growing grounds.
It was built in Vaughan Town-
ship even when township council
and county council vetoed the
plans. When it went to the Ontario
Municipal Board, even that august
body said no way.

But it went ap there anyway,
above the protestations of those
who love green -growing things. It
went up because the big money be-
hind the deal appealed to the pro-
vincial cabinet under Bill Davis.
the Davis government over -ruled
the township, the county and the
OMB and up went that horrific
plastic mountain and all those
tacky rides and shows where good
things should have been growing.
It never was Canada's Wonder-
land because it contained nothing
that was truly Canadian. In fact,
the original money to tuild it, if I
recollect correctly, came from Taft
Broadcasting and Monarch Life.
Taft was more American than ap-
ple pie.
When completed, it contained
Hanna -Barbera cartoon characters
with distinctive American flavors.
The only thing Canadian about it
is that it's in Canada. Even when it
opened, it had trouble with unions
because the management at the
time refused to pay union scale. I
have seen nothing to change my
attitude towards it in the 12 years
it has been in existence. I think it
is a blot on the farmland of this
province.
It should have been built on use-
less land, not on the best arable
land in the country.
Hundreds of acres of land are be-
ing lost to accommodate all the
claptrap that goes with a tacky
tourist attraction such as neighbor-
ing hotels -motels, parking lots and
fast food outlets. It is not just the
original acres that are lost but the
thousands of neighoring acres, too.
-_ I -vowed a decade ago that I
would never spend a cent to see
such an abomination of what Cana-
really is. I have not. My 12 -
year -old granddaughter chides me
constantly. She says the place is
"awesome" and "They add some-
thing new every year."
You watch. it will add all kinds
of junk to go with Paramount Pic-
tures and the Americanization of
the place will continue apace.
Watch for Top Gun rides and Days
of Thunder race car tracks and all
kinds ,of Star Trek junk. Maybe
even Fatal Attraction sex scenes
with Glenn Close's boobs and 'Mi-
chael Douglas's buns.
It never was, to my knowledge,
100 percent Canadian owned. Its
original investors sold out years
-ago and it was owned by IDS -CW
Ltd., a subsidiary of a Toronto-
based real estate company. Para-
mount owned 20 percent and
bought the additional 80 percent in
May for an estimated sale price of
$65.2 million.
I wonder what the original farm-
er got for the land?
So, there it sits in its artificial'
glory, all set to get Canadians to
fork over $20 to get in to see "Can-
ada's" Wonderland when it is no
more Canadian than Bill Clinton.
Ijdon't mind them calling it a
Wonderland. It's a wonder how it
got built when everyone else but
the provincial government didn't
want it.
But it sure as hell isn't Canadian.
Program applications
CLINTON - Applications for the
1992 NISA Program are currently
being completed as the July 31
deadline approaches. Questions
arise concerning how much money
do I send, what forms do I need,
what numbers go where, etc. The
end result needs to be an under-
standing of how the program
works and a properly -completed
=application.
- With this in mind, a workshop is
'planned for Wednesday, June 23 at
7:30 p.m. in the seminar room .of --
the Ontario Ministry of Agricul-
;cure and Food .office.. u ,Clinton.
Pre -registration is required by,corn-
taeting the office at 482-3428 or 1-'r
800-265-5170 by Friday. June 18.
The purpose of the workshop
will be to_give an overview of the
forms required, to look at key are-
as on the forms, to discuss the pur-
pose of the program and to answer
questions.
A NISA account can be used for
several purposes. As a "safety
net", it allows withdrawals when
the farm's gross margin falls below
average or when the individual or
farm family'staxable income falls
:tldow 8104000 or $20,000 respec-
tively. For some farmers NISA
will be used as another retirement
savings vehicle. If you are com-
.plositsg your own ,application _or,
wish to gain a better understanding
of the program, register today for
the NISA workshop on June 23.
