"The industry has not been wide- ly marketed," said Gabriel Robi- chaud, general manager of GMH. The company has been under new management for the past two years and they have started to do more intensive advertising. Manufactured housing are homes built in a factory. They have all the ' conveniences of a typical residen- tial home, said Robichaud. The Hensall based GMH special- izes in Mobile Homes, Modular -Homes and Park Models. The first two kind are intended. to :.be year round residences with the 1 Modual home'b being like aunga- low, while the latter is more of a seasonal -residence. Anyone visiting Hensall's com- munity yard sale May .22.may -re member seeing the mobile home display set up -by ,GMH. "Unfortu- nately mobile homes suffer from a bad stigma," Robichaud said. Generally people ..associate .the homes with the twisted pieces -of metal seen on television after a dis- aster, he said. But the ones manufactured at Hensall site weigh upwards of 30 tons. -They are made with the .same basic materials found in a residen- tial home. '"There are no metal roofs." There has been a bit of an up- swing in the market for all the homes, Robichaud said, because more older people are selling their large residential homes and looking for something a little smaller. "But. they still want all the mod- ern conveniences and luxuries they had in their big residential house." And GMH can provide .this, he said. "From frenchdoors, skylights, to whirlpools; our homes can be customized." -The majority of their customers are retirees and first time home buyers. "People are surprised when they tour our:modelsand see bow much space there is inside."'1he outside of • the homes gives a false impres- sion of.the.actual amount of living -space, he:said. 'There . is .little difference --be- tween GMH-produi:ts and standard residential housing, he said. "Our homes. are built in a .factory lather than on a site." Thehomes are -also inspected by the Canadian Stan- dards Association. This means .they don't have to worry about the weather slowing down. construction time. —The aver- age home can be .delivered to the customer within five weeks, Robi- chaud said. The interior of the homes is more spacious than it _appears on the outside. Gammons tip?
