Centennials beaten in physical game EXETER - After losing a very one-sided contest to the Falcons the week before, the Exeter Centennials rebounded and played a strong game against Alianza on Sunday at the Canner's Field. But despite bawling to a scoreless tie at the half, the host Centennials lost their fourth Western Ontario Soccer League game of the year, this time 1-0. As indicated by• the score, the opening half was even as Exeter for- wards Peter Hakvoort and Jeff Play - loot both threatened. The first half saw a collision be- tween Alianza's Inymar Salvador and Exeter goalie George McEwan. Salvador was going for the ball and when the collision was over Salva- dor was on the ground. The play continued despite a pos- sible injury to the Alianza player and McEwan complained to the official that while though he was injured, Salvador was offside. McEwan's argument fell upon deaf ears and he was handed a yel- low card. With abc in the first t 30 seconds left to play elf, Exeter defendet;Pat Donnelly came out of no where to kick the ball away during a breaka- way. But later in the game, after the vis- itors had scored what .proved to be the lone goal of the game, a shot from close range, Salvador was giv- en a yellow card. ,He was playing overly aggressive and getting sever- al of the Centennials upset. With time winding down, Exeter had a good chance to tie the game but Ray Lewis had trouble control- ling* lead pass and he shot wide. Exeter is idle for a couple of weeks at will not play again until June 26. Tae -Kwon -DQ _SKIRTS Times -Advocate, June 9,1993 Page 15 Olympic sllvermedaiist Marcie King presents new belts to local students Craig Hoover, right; received his yellow belt last Tuesday from Olym- pic silver medalist Marcie King, left; and instructor Sai Visouvath. EXETER - Marcie King is thinking of retiring from the sport which has brought her a great deal of recognition. Last Tuesday night, the Silver Medalist in the demonstration sport of Tae -Kwon -Do at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, was in Exeter to assist in the grading of several martial arts students. At tho.Lions Youth Centre, where nine local Tae -Kwon -Do students ad- vanced, King said she is thinking seriously of calling it quits. One reason may be the fact that Tae -Kwon -Do competitors get liule in the way of funding when they go to big tournaments. "This year, the government has cut down on sports organizations. They told me I had to pay $500 to go to the Canadians," she said. But in Manitoba at the national champsionships, the London resident successfully defended her middle -weight title for the fifth straight year. "1 was fighting two girls who went up a weight division." Fortunately, King is a gold -carded athlete which enabled her to $1,000 worth of expenses which helped cover the trip. But she will no doubt have to shell out a lot of money when she travels to New York in the near future for the world champiosnhips. New belts: At Tuesday's grading ceremony, King and instructor Sai Vi- souvath prented yellow belts to Panayese Fragiskatos, Janice Hoover and Phannady Peng, Craig Hoover recieved his green belt, Chanthaam- phone Phimphrachan, his blue belt, while Fragiskos Fragiskatos received a yellow stripe belt, Robert Khamsouk a green stripe belt, Brian Greenhill and Phanomsack Chanthavong a blue stripe belt. "1 am really impressed with this club, the spirit is excellent," said King. The Exeter school began last year and this was the third grading ceremo- ny of this year. Beginner classes are now forming.
