Joins Johnson for iriat,o OFSAA Danielle Miners ready for birtest By lvsd Oroves T -A 1taff - EXETER - One for you and one for me. That's how the competition be- tween South Huron District High School's Danielle Miners and Mandy Beck of Lord Dorchester seems to be going. Saturday, at the Ontario Federa- tion of Schools Athletic Associa- tion west regionals 'track and field meet held at the University of Windsor, Miners won the midget girls' javelin event. However a week -and -a -half earli- er at the WOSSA meet, it was Beck winning and Miners finishing sec- ond. They both are highly favoured heading into this weekend's provin- cial high school meet in Oshawa. A year ago. Miners, a grade ten student who broke the Huron -Perth record a few weeks ago, finished seventh at OFSAA. This year, she seems to be more prepared. "I know what I am doing now. Last year I didn't practice until a week before Huron -Perth. Now I Danielle Miners ...heads to OFSAA have an idea how to do the tech- nique," said Miners. She started the 1993 outdoor track and field season with a Hu- ron -Perth record of 33.10. Then came the regionals where it was the South Huron thrower at 34.62 while Beck was a very close second at 34.42. "It's going to be close., I was just lucky that time. I though she beat me and I thought I only had 34.25. 1 think she is going to be my main competition. Everyone is throwing 31 and 32. If I get a good throw in, I should win," said the hopeful Miners. This past week Miners had a planned out routine she was going to follow to get ready for the pro- vincial meet. "I think I will practice towards the beginning of the week but not near the end. I'll do a lot of stretch- es and throw the ball around." Another trip: OFSAA is a famil- iar place for Randy Johnson as the veteran javelin thrower will join Miners at the meet in Oshawa. He's been there the past three years and has brought home a silver and two bronze medals. Johnson is throwing very well and in Windsor, finished third with a personal best throw of 60.0 me- ters. Winning the senior boys' event was Derek McMillian of London Laurier at 64.60 meters. "Sixty meters usually wins OF - SAA," said Johnson. "This year there is more of a higher calibre," he added of the competition. McMillan is a former national winner is his age group and will be very tough to beat. In Windsor, Johnson, who com- peted Friday while Miners went on Saturday, said he threw into a bit of a head wind but made sure to toss the javelin more like a line drive. "The guy who beat me (second) he got second at the Canadian jun- iors last year and I was beating him for five throws." He said he hopes to throw 60 me- ters plus and in preparation will throw hard once before leaving. In Oshawa, Johnson has got a very early event and will be headed there immediately after Thursday night's athletic awards night at the high school. Just a note on the annual event which honours the top athletes at South Huron, parents are urged to attend and help celebrate the Pan- thers' accomplishments over the past year.
