Rowe, Fremlin
lead Geys win
EXETER - Trailing 8-5 at one
time, the Exeter Greys, backed by a
strong relief pitching effort by Jane
Rowe, rallied to beat visiting Se-
bringville 21-8 last Tuesday night.
The win gave the Greys a 2-0
record in the South Perth Ladies
Fastball League which they took
into when they hosted Crediton
Classics last night.
Against Sebringville, Exeter built
up aeay comfortable 5-0 lead in
the bottom of the first inning when
Kendra Arthur led off with a triple
and scored on Sherry - Harburn's
ground out.
A Gayle Beuermann single and a
Sandi Fremlin triple and it was 2-0.
The score was quickly 5-0 as
Brenda Bell walked, Shannon
McBride singled and free passes
went to Jill Beales and Lisa Hen-
derson.
Henderson returns to the Greys,
after sitting out last year with a
shoulder injury.
Greys starting pitcher Patti Down
struck out the side in the second
frame but got in trouble in the
fourth when Sebringville sent 11
batters to the plate, came up with
six hits and held an 8-5 lead. Down
was replaced by Rowe a who only al-
lowed a pair of hits.
But the determined Exeter team
tied it up in their half of the fourth
when Arthur was safe on a fielders'
choice, stole second and scored on
an error which put Beuermann
aboard.
With two out and a full count on
her, Fremlin reached out and con-
nected with an inside the park
homer which tied the score 8-8.
Solid pitching by Rowe and five
runs in the fifth and nine more in
the sixth gave the Greys their sec-
ond win in as many starts.
In the fifth, Cheryl Oke led off
with a single, moved on a ground
out by Betties, and Oke scored
what proved to be the winning run
on an rbi single by Rowe.
Fremlin double tri—the fifth and
on the night, the veteran centre
fielder when 3 -for -4 with a walk
and had five rbis.
IN THE FIRST PLACE, THERE'S LITTLE INCENTIVE
Now let's get this straight; I've got nothing against the ST.
LOUIS BLUES and the BUFFALO SABRES, afterall they don't
make the rules. They just took advantage of the rules and poor of
BOB BERRY, coach of the BLUES was taking slings and arrows
from everybody for his defensive style. Even his own superstar
BRETT HULL gave it to him, saying "the throw it in and chase it,
is lousy hockey to -watch is even lousier to play."
liut-BOWBlialtRY persevered and stuck to his guns and they beat
"CHICAGO with rid hot CURTIS JOSEPH in net. In one game in
'that Blues/Hawks series, the shots were 47 to 17 for CHICAGO. I
must also state that EDDIE "THE EAGLE" BELFOUR did not
comeup big (again) in the play-offs. But, to see CHICAGO (who
worked so hard during the season) gone in four games, just doesn't
seem right.
Another example of this is the BOSTON BRUINS, who won
eight straight games at the end of the season and looked unbeatable
because they were up against the biggest CHOKERS in all of
sports, the BUFFALO SABRE who haven't won a play-off round
since NAPOLEAN was a cede:. Everyone had the BRUINS sweep-
ning the series easily, but not me. I had said on Coaches Corner that
GRANT FUHR is the greatest goalie in the world and I would hate
to be going into the play-offs against him. He could win a series by
.himself and boy did he. The SABRES were outshot, but FUHR was
a rock back in the nets. (I've got it figured that GRANT FUHR
knows that he only has a few more kicks at the cat, so he'd better
•msrk.itgood). So, JOHN MUCKLER, the canny coach of the SA -
'BRCS rested his stars, put the team on a cruise and coasted the last
seven regular season gauges which they lost. It didn't matter anyway,
because the SABRES couldn't move up or down in the standings.
BUFFALO just sitting and waiting for the BOSTON BRUINS who
were killing themselves for FIRST PLACE.
Of course BUFFALO swept BOSTON with one of the prettiest
goals you'll ever see by BRAD MAY on ANDY MOOG. A funny
thing happened in the series, that I don't understand and it seemed
very strange to me. ANDY was pulled in the second game in BOS-
TON. He went into a aisle in back of the BOSTON bench and as he
was taking off some equipment, the T.V. camera caught him laugh-
ing. A guy gets pulled at home and he's laughing?? Figure that one
out. -
So, I hear what your saying, what's my point? My point is that
teams like the BOSTON BRUINS and the CHICAGO BLACK
HAWKS should get a better break than only (potentially) one extra
home game in the play-off rounds for working their tails off for 84
• games. For the teams that floated all year, all they have to do is steel
one game on the road and they have the advane. That's not right!
For instance, look at the NEW YORK RANGERS last year. They
ended up in first place overall and they
have to meet the NEW JERSEY
DEVILS and then the , Champs,
PITTSBURGH.
So you're saying, what's the solu-
tion? Give the team a bye in the fust
round or at least a BERMUDA vaca-
tion or something. Seriously, they'd
better come up with some incentive be-
causc I'm telling you if they don't,
teams arc going to cruise through the
season and start jockeying for positions around Christmas.

Classics lose slugfest
SEBRINGVILLE - A lot of runs didn't mean a victory for the Crediton
Classics as theyfell 15-14 to host Sebringville on Sunday in South Perth
Ladies Reuben League
Crediton, who:tried to;get tack on the winning track last night against
Exeter, held a 5-2 lead:after three complete innings but the hosts came up
with a big rally in which they plated six runs off of relief pitcher Brenda
Wilds in the sixth inning.
At the plate, the Classics had a strong outing as -they were led by Deb
Lord who had a pair of doubles and a single while Angie Gould connected
with a home run in the seventh.

runs before being replaced by Wilds.

Fastball roundup
Imperials snap
losing streak
By Fred Groves
T -A star
TAVISTOCK - Pitcher Steve
Cook gave up just five hits as he
helped the Exeter Chrysler Imperi-
als snap a five -game losing streak
in the South Perth Men's Fastball
Leagcc.
Sunday afternoon in Tavistock,
Cook, although still midget -aged,
got his first start on the men's team
and helped them to a 5-4 come -
from -behind win.
After winning the season opener,
a 9-5 decision to Tavistock Mer-
chants, the Imperials lost five in a
row including a 14-10 slugfest to
visiting Mitchell Mets on Thurs-
day.
Cook threw five complete in-
nings, but in the sixth with two out,
the host Orioles put two runners
aboard and relief pitcher Dan Hey-
wood had to come in to close and
getihesive.
Exeter got on the board in the top
of the third inning when Kevin
Lightfoot singled, stole second and
made the score 1-0 when Mike Neil
came up with a base hit.
But Tavistock came back and
made it 2-1 as they scored a pair in
the bottom of the third and added
one more in the next inning to go
up by a pair of runs.
In the top of the sixth frame, the
visitors got three runs as third base-
man Kevin Windsor led off with a
walk, advanced on a Sandy Hyde
ground out and Ben Armstrong,
pinch running for Windsor moved
to third on a Rod Johnston single.
The rally continued when Arm-
strong scored on a Derek Cooper
sacrifice fly to right field and with
two out Jeremy Brock singled up
the middle. Two more runs came in
when Lightfoot had his second base
hit of the day

run of the game, came in the top of
the seventh and final inning when
Darreh Neil led off and was safe on
an error and he moved over on
Heywood's sacrifice. A Mike Neil
ground out scored Darren Neil.
Tavistock tried to tie the game in
the bottom of the seventh on back-
to-back singles but Johnston turned
a double play and a long fly ball to
Lightfoot ended the game.
The best defensive play of the
game was in the bottom of the first
inning when Hyde made a catch in
centre field and while the Tavistock
runner was tagging at third. Hyde
threw home to catcher Gavin Snell
who slapped the tag on.
Mitchell 14. Exeter 40
This one was by no means a de-
fensive battle as the visiting Mets
pounded out 11 hits while the Im-
perials managed 16 hits.
This game looked as though it
might be a bit of an upset in the
early stages as the Mets, who came
into Thursday's game with an un-
blemished 5-0 record, trailed 2-0 at
the end of the first inning.
Exeter got on the board in the
bottom of the opening frame as
Lightfoot walked, moved on Dar- '
ren Neil's sacrifice bunt and scored
when Heywood blasted a double.
Heywood who went to third on the
throw scored when Mike Neil
grounded out.
Heywood who 'started on the
mound, got in trouble in the fifth as
he gave up five runs and in the
sixth allowed four more before
Mike Neil came on in relief.
Trailing 8-4 after five innings,
the Imperials cameback and scored
five runs off of three hits and three
walks. Hyde had a double to go
with his second inning home run.
The Imperials will host St. Pauls
on Thursday and head to Mitchell
this weekend for the Mets 16 -team
tournament.
