"It will take about five months for the paperwork to be processed," said Courtney's mother; who has be- come somewhat of an expert in dealing with govern- ment red tape. The Hems brought Courtney to Canada from Guatemala on March 3 after waiting eight months for the paperwork to be processed. Although this is their second adoption of a child from outside Canada, father Mery said the experience was still a bit scary. "You just don't know what to expect." They tried to adopt in Canada for 11 years, Teresa said. "We were told there would be a five to ten year wait... it seemed there was no hope, so we decided to try outside the coun- try." Now, with two large binders full of legal documents and official papers, the Heins have many stories to tell of experiences leading up to the adoption of Courtney and older brother Eric who was brought over from Ro- mania in 1991. After making the decision to adopt another child, they had to decide what country. "We wanted to get another baby from Romania, but it would be too diffi- cult with new laws that have been put in place by their government," Mery said. Through word of mouth the Hems were put in touch with a lawyer in Stratford who had successfully brought 50 children to Canada 'from Guatemala in the past two years. Just one month after applying for a child they were notified a baby girl was up for adoption. It was just a matter of getting the paper work in order. "We found out Courtney was ours on July 15, just 10 days after she was born," Teresa said. "We were sent a picture of her right away, then again at Christmas." Seeing the pictures of Courtney made the waiting more difficult, she said. "We figured something would go wrong because things seemed to be going too smoothly," said Court- ney's father. It seemed easier this time, he said, because they knew what to expect When they adopted Eric it was an adventure into the unknown. Eric was 13 months old when they were final- ly able to get him out of Romania. "When we saw him they told us it would take five weeks... it turned into five months and there were times when it seemed impossible to get him," said Merv. "There was less stress this time because we were experienced in the procedures and we knew of support groups that could help us deal with any problems," Teresa said. Their lawyer was also helpful in organiz- ing legal matters and travel arrangements. "She helped us down to the last detail." The couple made the six hour flight to Guatemala and planned to travel to the village Quetzaltenango where Courtney was born. But when they arrived the foster mother, who was also Courtney's natural grandmother, was waiting for them at the hotel. They were please; to know the grandmother, instead of a stranger, was looking after Courtney. "It was nice to know she was well cared for," Teresa said. Now that Courtney has become a Canadian citizen another document can be added to the long chronology that traces what has been busy life so far. And the Herns can settle into a regular routine of being parents to toddlers. Adjusting.to the latest addition to the family is Mery Hern, left, with son Eric, below, wife Teresa and new daughter Courtney. v • • • • • • • e • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • e • • • • • • • • • • • • • • s • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • a • • e F • • • e • • • s • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •••••••.• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • e • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • e • • • • • A • • • • • • • • • • • • • • H.D.
