Former cycling champ
urges helmet -safety
By Catherine O'Brien

CREDITON - Over the past few
weeks a number of promotions to
raise awareness in helmet safety
have taken place across Huron
County. One such event brought
Denise Kelly, former professional
cyclist for the Canadian National
Cycling Team, into eight elemen-
tary schools across the region.
Speaking at Stephen Central
School recently, Kelly explained
the necessity of wearing a bicycle
helmet.
"I've heard all the excuses not to
wear a one" she said. "People say
it's stupid, it's hot, or it messes up
your hair." But, Kelly said, the rea-
sons for wearing one far out weigh
the excuses not to.
She told the students about major
accidents she has had during her ca-
reer that were lessened because of
the helmet.
She was involved in a crash with
40 other cyclists and while attempt-
ing to stop she flew over the handle
bars of the bike and landed on her
head.
"The helmet had a huge crack in
it," she said. Luckily it is a racing
requirement that cyclist must wear
a helmet, she said.
Kelly told the students she began
to realized how important the hel-
met was as a safety tool. She start-
ed to wear one during training.
She was one of the first cyclist to
do this.
"The guys laughed at me," she
said. "But if I hadn't been wearing a
helmet during that accident I'm sure
I wouldn't be standing here today
talking to you."
Kelly spent eight years as a pro-
fessional cyclist...As Canada's Num-
ber One female cyclist she has
competed in France, Austria, Taz-
mania, New Zealand and Greece.
Kelly described to the students
the feeling of accomplishment
when she competed in theTour de
France in 1989. At one stage of the
race she was in fourth position, but
a crash forced her out of the race
with an injured knee.
She also achieved a gold medal
at the 1990 World Trials as well as
a bronze medal at the Pan-
American Games in 1991.
She is now retired.
"I continue to wear a helmet even
though I'm not racing professional-
ly because it took me seven years
reach my potential," she said.
"I don't want to lose all that hard
work just because I hit a pot hole
and injure my head."
The Toronto native told the stu-
dents they have yet to reach their
potential so they have more to lose
if they don't guard against head in-
juries.
"Maybe three years ago people
would laugh if you were wearing a
helmet, but now people are slowly
getting used to it."

Helmets needed
says doctor
EXETER - Now that warm
weather is on the way, more people
are taking to the road on bicycles.
That's why the parents association
at Exeter Public School and the Hu-
ron County Health Unit held a safe-
ty awareness meeting last Tuesday.
Dr. Michael Rieder, an emergen-
cy room physician at Children's
Hospital in London, told parents
about the need for helmet safety.
"This is a big issue for those of us
who work in emergency."
As bike use in Canada has in-
creased, he said, so have the num-
ber of accidents.
Head injuries, hesaid, are one of
the leading killers of people under
18 involved in an accident.
Rieder said he would like to see
regulation put in place for helmets.
A private members bill is present-
ly in the Ontario Legislature but it
will not be known until September
1994 whether the bill will become
taw.
