MARYS - At the start of the season, Exeter Chrysler Imperials coach Fred Cook said he would be happy if his team would play .500 ball in the South Perth Men's Fast - ball League. Well, that's how they have man- ed out as the Imperials beat Tavis- tock in their opener but dropped a 7-0 decision to host St. Marys Se- lects Sunday night. Facing Selects ace pitcher Don Rae, the Imperials could manage just three hits, two of those by sec- ond 'baseman Rod Johnston and a seventh inning double by Mike Neil. Johnston who has being playing well both defensively and offen- sively, singled in the third and again on a hard hit ball in the sixth. Taking over the starting job for Jim Allison who is not with the team this year, Johnston helped turn a double play in the bottom of the sixth when St. Marys Scott Shackleton hit the ball to Kevin Windsor at third who threw it to Johnston to get Steve Hart and then over to Derek Cooper to get Shack- leton. It was the second double play of the game for the visitors as Selects' catcher John Moore hit the ball to Exeter shortstop Mike Desjardine, he got it to Kevin Lightfoot at first and then Lightfoot threw home where Gavin Snell slaped the tag on Doug Levy. Dan Heywood started on the mound for Exeter but after giving up home runs to Jim Siddall and Exeter defeats Tavistock 9-5 EXETER - Although they man- aged just five hits, the Exeter Chrysler Imperials won their South Perth Men's Fastball League season openeratilhome Thursday night. Four runs m both the third and seventh innings helped the Imperi- als beat the Tavistock Merchants 9- 5. The visitors led 2-0 after two - and -a -half innings but in the top of the third, the Imperials got their of- fence rolling in a big way when second baseman Rod Johnston loft- ed a hit into centre field and after some confusion by the Merchants', he ended up at second. Johnston scored after Kevin Lightfoot was safe on a fielders' choice and a bunt single by Darren Neil and a base hit up the middle by pitcher Dan Heywood gave the hosts the lead. Mike Desjardine who had two hits on the night, sin- gled to score Heywood. Exeter added another run in the fourth as Sandy Hyde was safe on an error and then his speed and a couple of wild pitches by Tavis- tock hurler Chad Zeigler saw Hyde score.
