Established in 1973 by Dave and Carol Steckle, Huron Ridge Acres offers the largest selection of perennials in the area from their 42,000 square feet of greenhouse space. =When the family business was started 20 years ago it was as Dave Steckle says, "It was more of a sideline or hobby, but quickly grew to our present status as the result of a grow- ing demand for our services with the help of our family. Our kids grew up around the greenhouses." Son Kevin, a 1988 graduate of Ridgetown College of Agri- cultural Technology is assistant manager and his wife Lor- raine assists Carol Steckle with the firm's flower shop in Zu- rich. As for further expansion, Steckle says, " We will grow with the market and expand as necessary. A couple of our green- houses will be torn down and replaced in the very near future and we will be coming up with more modern automatic water- ing systems and drip irrigation." In October of 1992, Steckle began weekly trips to the Onta- rio Flower Growers Co -Operative dutch clock auction in To- ronto with from 500 to 1,000 poinsettias, Iillies, gloxinias, Mar- tha Washington geraniums and hanging baskets. This extra market allows the greenhouses to be kept in op- eration 12 months of the year and provides extra employment for the three full time staff members in addition to the Steckle family. Carol Steckle says, "We are blessed with up to a dozen part-time help each spring. This repeat help each year for six to eight weeks with no turnover in staff allows us to serve the customer better." Dave Steckle feels the success of their business and the need to continue to grow is their impressive customer ser- vice. He adds, " The customer is number one with us. We will take all the time necessary to answer their questions in filling their needs for flowers, plants, soil, mulch, manure, shrubs, trees, etc." We maintain the same hours each year so the customer gets used to them and knows when we will be open. In addition to Hutton Ridge Acres, the Steckies operate Hu- ron Ridge Flowers a full service flower shop on Goshen street in the heart of downtown Zurich. Steckle advises that his company does not do landscaping, but caters to the do-it-yourself home gardener with everything he or she needs from flowers, potted plants, bedding plants, shrubs and trees to soils, additives, fertilizers and chemicals. Shrubs and trees are planted in their own containers so they can be planted in the summer and poinsettias and Iillies are available during the holiday seasons. Steckle says it is not uncommon to hear customers com- plain, "There are just too many plants to choose from" as they check over the huge selection of varioous houseplants, bed- ding plants, patio pots and hanging baskets."
