Lucas was scheduled to travel to St. Marys on Sunday for both of those clubs' season opener but the game, was postponed due to rain. In- stead, Lucan -will open their season Friday night in Lucan at 6:30 p.m. against Exeter. Although the anticipation of the start of ball season was put on hold, Lucan coach Brian Munro is looking towards a good year. "It doesn't look too bad. I've got some new kids out of London," said Munro whose team will have three players from the city. This year, Lucan has five junior aged players which means they will move up from a juvenile team to a junior club. Munro expects as many as 11 back from last year's team plus the addition of shortstop Steve Nixon who was with Lucan two years ago but since they were a juve- nile team, played with Exeter in 1992. "He's just finishing up university. He's speedy and he's pretty handy with the bat," said Munro. Also returning to the team is Chris Smith who will pitch and share the fust base duties with Greg Boshart and Brett Revington. Brad Coughlin who did a lot of pitching last year will see less time on the hill and more at second base. Paul Smith will at third with Nixon at short to round out the infield. - .Newcomer Rob McQueen will do the catching with Chric.it, Matt Munro, Boshart, Nixdn, Paul Smith and McQueen scheduled to do the pitching. Pitching is the concern of most junior teams. "When you're talking weakness in junior baseball, it's probably pitching," said Munro. In the outfield, Lucan has Mike .Munro, Keith Robson, Brian Davies, Scott Smith and Brett Humphries. • r`p.m :4100.0.0Wisikikk100 Lucan, 2 p.m. %5tcan, 6:30 pm. ;.11t#0,„0, Lstran tt len on, 6 p.m. ;'r¢3'- (.oderich at Lacca, i p.m. 1 p.m. it, 6:30 kap #f1lloderich at. This year, the WJBL will have only five teams, Clinton, St. Marys, Goderich, Exeter and Lucan. A year ago the league was a combined junior -midget loop but the two will be separate this year. Exeter looks to hive a strong club and coach John Gillespie seems pleased with the turnout of over 16 players so far. Pitching looks to be a strong point as the Exeter club will have Mike Agnew, Mark Glavin, Jody Masse, Mark Keller and Jason,Heywood all available to go from the hill. Hitting on the other hand could be a little tougher to come by. "That will probably be our biggest challenge. It's traditionally been a point we have to work on," said Gillespie. Although the batting order is far from being set, and no doubt there will be a lot of juggling after Exeter's opener in Lucan on Friday, look for either Keller or Jamie Ramer to lead off. Ramer plays second base in an infield which will have Ryan Linden - field at first, Derek Beckett at second and Steve Farquhar at shortstop. Returnee Lee Mathieson can play both third base and the outfield. Gillespie will have a lot of help coaching as both David Schwindt and,. 'Steve Memer have offered their services. Schwindt will be a player- coachand tha joahitting catcher will also play some games with the- senior Express. "He's (Schwindt) junior age but we'll use him as a player -coach." It's too early to predict how they will do against the other four teams but Gillespie knows who will be tough. "We're expecting Goderich will be competitive. Clinton has got strong pitching." Clinton is a midget -aged team but have opted to'play in the junior league. Exeter has a 26 -game regular schedule and have an -ton game scheduled in London on May 2 and on May 8, will tog a singlle:day four -team tournament at the Alvin Willert Field. The WJBL has an unbalanced schedule as it often does, Lucan for in- stance play two games more than Lucan and St. Marys will play a mixed schedule as they will go up against teams from the London league as well. "I think we're going to be okay," said coach Dick Lord as far as the team's competitveness. "We'll be stronger than fast year." He said the forwards are young and speedy and combine that with a strong defense led by goalie Craig Winbow, and the Centenni- als shouid win a few more games than last year.
