HENSALL - Six months after it
Alspened, the experimental Hensall
,aeomposting -facility received its
tone -thousandth truckload of organ-
'•4ic waste last week.
As facility manager Mark Jacob
'explains u, the proof that such corn -
'posting programs are needed in On-
rtario is in the fact 5,300 metric
Aonnes of organic matter have ar-
Atived at the' building, "and we've
"Trocessed about half of that."
The demand on the three-
tgtannels that break down the mill
wastes and other organic matter
may he outstripping their capacity,
-'bin:Jacob predicts -the facility may
`tbeable to catch -up with the huge
,pile of material stored outside over
•Atte course of the summer. The fall
harvest will bring the next wave of
grain screenings that would have
otherwise ended up in the landfill.
A landfill is just about the worst
place to break down material, says
Jacob, noting grass clippings have
been proven to remain green and
unchanged after being'buried for 20
years.
In addition to grain screenings
from the three Hensel) elevators
which contributed to the project,
-.Cooks, W.G. Thompson, and the
7Co-Op, woodchips are also being
.added to the .compost "recipe" in
the hope of st iiking the right bal-
ance. Scraps Oftwood and card-
board from local industries like

:write has only just started to ship out
:its first product.
Jacob said the finished compost,
which meets all ministry require-
ments for unrestricted use, is sold
at 56 to S9 a cubic yard, depending
on quality. Nurseries, landscaping
and topsoil companies arc already
buying the material, and Jacob said
local farmers are also interested in
adding it to their fields as a soil
conditioner.
There are no plans to bag the ma-
terial for sale individually, howev-

As for the future of the Net ill
program, Jacob said he can see it
being expanded beyond its present
"pilot project" capacity into a facili-
ty to handle organic and industrial
waste from all over Humn County.
"This could easily be expanded to
include other waste," said Jacob,
explaining that industrial products,
food processing wastes, and super-

Household leftovers aren't part of
the plan, however, for which Jacob
says the backyard composter is still
the best solution.
"Backyard composting is still the
'test thing you can do," he said.
-Vttcob calls the Hensall program a
'true "closed-loop" system, in which
compost created locally is returned
to the area's land.
"This facility is excellent because
it promotes sustainability," he said.
Although the Hensel) project cost
over $1 million to build, Jacob says
others like it can be expected to
crop up around the province once
its success is realized in other mu-
nicipalities and regions.
