Grand Bend CWL
enjoy slides of
Holy Land
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - The Catholic
Women's League of Immaculate
Heart of Mary parish in Grand
Bend hosted an Easter Ecumenical
service on April 13, attended by
nearly 80 people from local church-
es. The guest speaker was Rev. Ed
Laksmanis, pastor of the Crediton
United Church, who presented an
Easter message illustrated by slides
from his recent trip so the Holy
Land. One of the revelations he
shared came from following the
Master's steps in Galilee. Most of
Christ's ministry, preaching mira-
cles, all took place in an area no
larger than the size of today's aver-
age parish, yet what Jesus did and
said transformed the world. Per-
haps, Laksmanis reflected, each
pastor should concentrate on mak-
ing his own parish the best possi-
ble, and that in its own way, will
contribute to the salvation of the
world. The slides of Jerusalem,
Gethsemane and the Via Dolorosa
were very moving, particularly in
this Easter season.
The women were welcomed by
CWL president Cathy Vrolyk and
Gera Peters read the inspirational
"At Eastertime". Roberta Walker
led the general hymns and Idella
Gable provided accompaniment on
the church organ, including the mu-
sic for two solos by Walker, "It is
Finished" and "I Know My Re-
deemer Liveth" from Handel's Mes-
siah.
There were also contributions to
the program from the visiting
churches. Lynn Douglas, from the
Grand Bend United Church, per-
formed the solo "He Grew the
Tree." Dorothy White, of St. John's
by the Lake Anglican, read a mod-
ern paraphrase of the "Good Samar-
itan Tale" with a battered wife wan-
dering the streets, as church
officials pass by shaking their
heads, and a stranger shares Salva-
tion Arany castoffs and Kraft dinner
in her small apartment.
A representative from Greenway
United 'read "In the Garden of
Gethsemane" and Gertic McCrae
and Cynthia Lazaro of Dashwood
United sang a beautiful duet "He
Suffered For Me". Father Paul
Beck gave the Benediction.
The sum of 5178 was collected,
to be sent to the Palliative Care pro-
gram in our area.
