LETTER FROM TUE COUNTY TREASURER.
GODERICE SUDO 8, 1874
To the Warden and County Council :
I beg to report, that on the nth of
Febrnary last I oroceeded to Toronto
and presented your memorial to the
Government in regard to the extra in-
terest claimed on the Railway allow-
ance. Mr. Crooks, the Provincial
Treasurer, said that the matter had al-
ready been decided by the Government
adversely to the claim of the County,
bnt I was privately informed that the
claim for- interest from 1st January,
1873, to 1st February, 1874, was being
allowed, and from the printed schedules
of 1874 I afterwards found it was so.
This will make about $0,000 addition-
al on the whele County allowance.
The °amity of Perth, who were also
pressing their claim for the additional
oue per cent from 1853 to 1860, were
desirous of testine.pthe legality of the
claim in the Courts, and Mr. Davidson,
the Chairman of their Committee,
wrote to me in April last, asking this
Comity to join them in a suit. I emu-
manicated with the members of the
Warden's Committee and obtained
their consent to promise to bear half
the cost if tho County of Perth should
test the matteain the collets; thave not
since learned whether they have yet
taken action or not. In March last
the Officers of this County were notifi-
ed to appear together before Mr. Crooks,
the Provincial Treasurer, in regarci to
the claim made by Bruce for part of the
railway allowance allotted to Huron.
Our presence Wa8 not necessary, as no
evidence was taken.
After asking for a copy of the settle-
ment made between the Countlea *01
separation, which we found he had in
his possession'since the sitting of the
House, and n,sking if a certified state-
ment furnished by Mr. Adamson some
months before,' was correct, Mr. Crooks
said that was all that was wanted, and
stated that the Government would take
the matter into ccnsideration and. de-
cide what action to take. The Govern-
ment have since decided to give Bruce
$18,000 out of the amount formerly al-
lotted to Huron, thus making the divi-
sion in proportion to the amounts paid
to tho Municipal Loan Fand by the
two Counties respeetively both before
and after separation, and not on the
amouttt assumed by the junior County
as providedby the resolutions. I think
it would be • well before .submitting to
this deduction to take legal opinion RS
