Cycling team member to
bring helmet safety
'message to local sefiaills
EXETER - Out of concern for the
health and safety of children, Exet-
er Public School Parent Association
and Huron County Health Unit are
planning a Bicycle Helmet Promo-
tion Campaign starting the first
week of May.
Recent research shows that bicy-
cle accidents kill over 60 children
'each year in Canada, seriously in-
-jure over 5,000 and are the most
-common cause of child head inju-
ries. Just falling from a bike onto
the driveway can bump a young
brain hard enough to cause catas-
trophic disability.
The Bicycle Helmet Promotion
campaign will involve many of the
other schools in the South -Huron
area. Peer pressure plays a part in
getting kids to wear their helmets
so we want as many parents and
students as possible to get the edu-
cation they need to believe a helmet
is important for their health and
safety.
The campaign will consist of as-
semblies, poster exhibits, educa-
tional activities, a parent informa-
tion. night and coupons from local
merchants offering reduced:prices
on helmets.
Two of the tiajor events planned
will be a visit to several area
schools on Tuesday May 4 and
Wednesday, May 5 by former Ca-
nadian National Cycling Team
member Denise Kelly. Kelly has
many cycling achievements to her
credit including participation in
three World Championships, the
Pan-American Games, the Tour de
France and the Commonwealth
games to name a few.
Her visit to Exeter Public School
is Tuesday .afternoon. She -will be
speaking to all studentsabout giber
career and the importance of wear-
ing helmets not just for pros but
everyone.
Dr. Michael Rieder, a specialist
in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
will be speaking about Bicycle
Helmet Use. This is open to the
public and is being held at Exeter
Public School Tuesday, May 11 at
7:30 p.m.
Dr. Rieder has done research in
the area of accidental head injury
and has practiced Emergency Med-
icine at the Hospital for Sick Chil-
dren in Toronto, the Children's
Hospital of Western Ontario and
Children's Hospital of Michigan.
He is a consultant in Paediatric
Emergency Medicine at the Uni-
versity of Western Ontario.
Everyone is welcome and en-
couraged to come and hear It from
an expert.
Coupons will be distributed --at
the meeting, entitling purebâ– sertrof
bicycle helmets to $5 oft-Yce
at Exeter's Canadian Ti ,Atfac-
Leans Hardware, and at -IUD
Sports.
