EXETER - Memories are wonderful, but not only do people get excit-
ed about looking at the past but the present as well.
Recently, Joe Jeffs of Exeter joined several of his former hockey play-
ing buddies from Toronto in a reunion which helped celebrate their for-
mer coach's 80th birthday.
Jeffs, a member of the 1943-44 Columbus Boys Club's Toronto Hock-
ey League juvenile champions honored coach Carmen Bush.
"Half the guys 1 hadn't seen since we played, some left to go into the
service," said Jeffs.
Former player Norm Rattray orchestrated the reunion and it was no
easy task tracking down his teammates, many have passed away.
"He found me through another friend. How he got hold of some of
these guys was fantastic, one guy is in Indiana and he got a hold of him
through school," said Jeffs who has lived in Exeter for three years now.
It was quite a reunion as the team took a look at press clippings from
their 19 -game undefeated streak and gazed at their team picture from

the recent International Special Olympics in Austria.

Austria with silver
EXETER - A local athlete has returned from an international competi-
tion with a silver medal.
At the International Special Olympics held in Austria last month, Exet-
er's Elsie Swan, a member of the Exeter Figure Skating Club was second
overall in her category.
"My face turned red when I went up on the podium," said Swan on re-
ceived her medal.
The oath of Special Olympians is, "Let me take part. If I can't win, let
me be brave in the attempt.'
Swan, a provincial and Canadian champion, admitted she was nervous
' about the Olympics which had up to 43 different countries participating.
"I did compulsorys, that's inside edges and outside edges. They're not
that hard."
Austria is a long way from Exeter and there was a lot to see and do
when not on the ice. Swan took full advantage of going on the many sight-
seeing tours.
"The mountains were pretty tall. I saw a castle and where the 'Sound of
tvlusic' was made said Swan of the popular musical filmed in Austria.
While the Olympics cap off the winter sports season for the athletes that
doesn't mean Swan will stop participating as she says she will swim dur-
ing the season to stay in shape for next year's skating competitions.

The idea of the reunion came after Rattray attended Bush's 80th birthday
party in Toronto and decided to get the old team together for a reunion.
"If you grew up Toronto, you knew Carm Bush," said Jeffs. "He's been
in boys work all his life. He coached and put 25,000 kids through his
club."
Jeffs explained that one of those clubs, the Columbus Boys Club was
just one of four big clubs in the city of about 600,000. There was St. Mar-
ys, Columbus, Trinity K Club, Gerrard K Club all trying to beat each oth-
er.
"From the time we could skate or throw a football, there was that rival-
ry.
Off1oiwar: Columbus won the Millard Trophy at the end of the 1943-
44 season and soon as hockey was over, several team members, including
Jeff went off to war, six of them did not return.
"I never played hockey again after that season. I went overseas and 1
never got back into sports, up to 18, that was my whole life."
Jeffs said others went and played hockey overseas and even continued
Rtr gette toumanierits
playing when they came back from the war.
In fact, Jeffs, for the most pan, has lost interest in hockey altogether.
"I've kind of lost interest in hockey. Once expansion came along it
was never the same. 1 still watch it when the playoffs come along."
Getting a phone call from Rattray to go to the reunion came as a big
surprise for Jeffs. The team enjoyed a nice dinner together, talked about
old times and went to Maple Leaf Gardens to watch the Leafs win a 1-0
squeaker over the New Jersey Devils.
"Some of them haven't changed at all, but other guys changed quite a
bit. Once you find out who they were then you could recognize them."
Jeffs said his mates told him he hadn't change much and his old coach
remembered him immediately.
The club system in which Jeffs and his teammates played on is some-
what different now where hockey teams come out of communities and
everyone goes to school together. He only went to school with a couple
of the others so when they were in Toronto they got together to talk
about past school days.
"We had a lot of fun," said Jeffs.
