Co-chairman of the hearing, Douglas Drinkwalter said the inquiry came at the request of the police chief, the Chiefs Association, and the Ministry of the Solicitor General. The first session, lasting only a half-hour, determined that the hearing of evidence, which may take up to 10 days, will start May 10 at 10 a.m. in the town council chambers. J.K. Caskey, representing chief Jack Harkness, suggested that the crown may want to install an administrator for the force in this "emergency situa- tion". Caskey also said the town is prepared to pull out of the police com- munications system. Drinkwalter apparently didn't share Caskey's position, saying "they're certainly not going to pull the plug on the radio today." Crown barrister David Brown said any members of the public wishing to present evidence in the inquiry should get in touch with him to arrange a possible time for presentation.
