MITCHELL - If you want to
score, you have to shoot the puck.
Friday night in Mitchell, the visit-
ing Lucan Irish could manage only
19 shots, two of those in the first
period, resulting in a 6-5 loss to the
Hawks.
Game Two of the best -of -seven
O11A Junior Development League
west division finals goes tonight in
Lucan at 8:15 p.m. followed by a
2:30 p.m. start again in Lucan on
Friday and the teams head back to
Mitchell on Sunday.
"Just awful, I don't know how to
explain it," said Lucan coach Ken
Needham whose team trailed 4-0
before showing some signs of life.
It was 1-0 when Mitchell's Craig
Quipp stole a pass in the Lucan
zone and shot it between Brent
Lewis' legs. Moments later, the Lu -
can goalie was shaken up after he
was hit hard behind his own net.
The loss halted Lucan's Conseat-
tive win streak at ten, including
eight straight playoff victories.
Lucan came out very flat in the
first period and a half and didn't
start picking up the pace until Jeff
Stanton, Jason Wilson and Paul
O'Shea began showing aggressive-
ness in getting to the puck and.fm-
ishing off their checks.
"I think it's because we've had it
pretty easy with Belmont and Exet-
er. When they (Mitchell) resold
first we didn't know what to do,"
said Stanton.
Mitchell turned it on in the sec-
ond frame and went up 4-0 on
goals by Quipp, with his second,
Don Boyd and Rob Jarmuth. With
nine seconds left in the middle peri-
od, Lucan's Ed VanKerkoerle
scared.
"They forced us all night and we
just panicked," said Needham.
A sign of frustration came from
Lucan defensemen Craig Brown,
who was given a penalty, in which
the Hawks cashed in on, and just as
he came out of the box, was given
an unsportsmanlike penalty, an-
other Mitchell goal.
Nothing right: Mitchell seemed
to be doing everything right and be-
fore they adjusted, the Irish were
doing everything wrong.
"They were winning the battles in
tie corner. We talked about it at the
lead of the second period and decid-
sled to get two men in and dump it
An," said Stanton.
VanKerkoerle's goal and the ea-
gerness of a few Irish players got
the team going.
"That goal at the end of the sec -
gad period really turned things
saatwnd," said Needham.
;Lucan came out fast in the third
nod 1:40 in it was 4-2 when a Chris
" ihater shot was re -directed and
Arent in past Dennis Scherbarth.
THE (T.V.) GODS MUST BE CRAZY'
Did you ever hear of anything so -ridiculous as the item that's on
e agenda of the/PRIVATE BROADCASTERS? They're rococo
.mending that when a fight Domes on the TV screen, the camera pans
:she crowd instead of showing the fight. They say it's too violent! It's
i and to believe, but these are the same people who, one their news
-programs will show dead bodies laying allover the place, victims of
stabbings, car accidents, you name it. It's funny that the same people
are not too worried when a guy throws a baseball at somebody's
head and at a 100 mph, or worried about showing the countless
bench -clearing brawls in baseball. They also don't seem to get upset
in airing football games where the idea is to "kill the quarterback".
(12 quarterbacks taken out in 4 weeks last season).
You can imagine that reaction of the TV viewing crowd when the
cameras pan the crowd who'll be going wild watching the fight on
the ice. Tell me what world these guys live in? They wouldn't know
a hockey player if they slept with BOBBY ORR. The TORONTO
STAR had a poll to ace if people wanted to aee hockey fights on
TV. The results were yes - 3,700, no - 800. Naturally the poll didn't
turnout the way the STAR wanted it so they buried the story.

LIGHTNING BOLTS OF BAD NEWS
',The TAMPA .BAY LIGHTNING hockey club is being pun-
ished for being successful. PHIL ESPOSITO drafted and traded to
have a fine competitive team and he hired two super coaches in
TERRY CRISP and WAYNE CASHMAN. The sad note is that
they might have to draft sixth because HARTFORD has a worse
record.
The draft will go like this OTTAWA, SAN JOSE, MIAMI, AN-
AHEIM, HARTFORD and then TAMPA BAY. Along with their
arena deal falling through, this has to be a blow. Punished for being
successful? It doesn't aean right,
THE MIGHTY DUCKS?'!?
1 know a lotof people dislike the name "MIGHTY DUCKS" for
a hockey team and while i have. to admit it doesn't have the ring of
the BOSTON BRUINS, it's okay by me. After all the name PITTS-
BURGH 'PENGUINS doesn't inspire
enc. and they seem to do alright.
LOCKED -OUT AGAIN
How about poor MIKE GREFNE, a
humble locksmith who lives in COTE
ST. LUC, QUEBEC where less than
5% of the community speaks french.
He has to spend 3518 for an advertise-
ment in English and another 3518 for
the same ad in french . In the wads of
Gilles -Louis Docine, an official of "de
la Langue franchaise" (language police)
"it's the law, quite simply."
P►ve minutes later •Kevin Leitch
blasted a low slap shot and it was
4-3.
In the third, the Trish blueliners
pad a lot more time to work with
the puck and get the shots away.
"Even if our point men dumped it
in from centre they finished off
their check," said Needham of how
the Hawks were playing earlier.
Although Mike Ulch gave the
hosts a two -goal lead again, the
Irish kept the pressure on as Steve
-Milder. -put a perfect pass on Wil-
Nlon's stick.
What proved to %e'atnning
goal, came when Mit011Oi1's Craig
Eidt raced towards the puck and
met Lewis at the Lucan blueiine but
Eidt slipped the puck around him
and scored into the empty net.
"If he (Lewis) had cleared it out,
%the would have been a hero. It was a
'950-50 thing," said Needham.
Greg DePrest slipped one
through Scherbarth's pads to make
it 6-5 but the Hawks hung on.
"Everybody's positive about the
way we came back. We're -looking
forward to Wednesday," said Stan-
ton.

The Broncos missed going to the champion-

proud of themselves because of the pride,
determination and sportsmanship they
showed throughout the tournament. The
only reason they did not advance was be-

championships, South Huron won
the consolation title at the fairly
unique event.
Each school plays against an-
other in a format which has one di-
vision following the next. The boys
.singles, girls singles, boys doubles,
girls doubles and mixed doubles
play right after each other against
another school.
So while your teammate is play-
ing, you are on the sidelines cheer-
ing and waiting your turn on the
same court. Rules do not make it
mandatory to have the same boys
single, etc. so it gives the team
some variation.
After losing to Oakridge, South
Huron Ilion_went on to win three
straight. in order 10 beat another
school, you must win three of the
five divisions.
On Tuesday, Ryan Stuart and Ja-
son Coolman combined to win the
Woodstock Collegiate Institute
Tournament boys' doubles finals.
At South Huron the track and
field team and the soccer teams are
preparing for their seasons.
