New program will teach children about agriculture

SEAFORTI-1; - What's in a pizza
and where do the ingredients come
from?
Just about everything which
makes up the favourite meal can be
found on farms in Huron County.
Beginning April 13, over 1,400
Grades 4 and 5 students from
across the county will take a long
and curious look at agriculture.
The program called, 'A Slice of
Huron', allows children to ask
many questions about agriculture
and gives them a chance to share
their knowledge with their class-
mates.
"Agriculture awareness has al-
ways been an area the OMAF has
always wanted to do," said Jane
Muegge of the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
Last year, Muegge and represen-
tatives from the Seaforth Agricultu-
ral Society went to York County to
lake a look at their 'Pizza Project .
OMAF, along with not only the
Seaforth Agricultural Society • but
its counterparts in Exeter and Clin-
ton, decided a similar program

could be run successfully in Huron
County.
Muegge then made presentations
to the Huron -Perth Separate School
Board, the Huron Board of Educa-
tion and the Clinton Christian
School.
"It was received wry .favoura-
bly," said Muegge.
Beginning April 13, students will
travel to the Seaforth Fairground"

VA= they will learn about six ba-
sic sections of agriculture in the
county.
Those sections include red meat,
poultry and eggs, dairy, grain, fruits
and vegetables and a rainbow sec-
tion which is very general as it in-
cludes erosion control, and the bee
industry just to name a couple of
topics in that section.
Without a doubt, Huron County's
major industry is agriculture and a
large portion of its population is ru-
ral.
"Agriculture is exposed to us all
the time but it's very specialized,"
said Muegge.
Several sections: She said when
the students travel to Seaforth, they
will learn two of the six sections in
their half-day program and when
they return to the classroom, will
exchange information with other
students.
"A child who comes from a dairy
farm won't go to the dairy section,"
explained Muegge.
Animals will be brought in and
students will learn how to milk a
cow.
Muegge said the reason Grades 4
and 5 were •selected was because it
fits into their curriculum.
Darlene Ellison teaches a Oracle 5
class at Exeter Public School which
will be going to Seaforth to learn
about agriculture.
"We are in a rural setting and it is
important for them to learn," said
Ellison.
Exeter is an urban populated
community so students will be
learning what their neighbours have
been taught all their lives.
"I grew up on a farm myself and I
had it first hand," said Ellison.
Joining Exeter Public School on
Wednesday afternoon will be 29
students from Usborne Township
and 29 from Stephen Township,
while the day before, 29 students
from Mt. Carmel, 67 from St. Boni -

Lucan
Animalistics
By Kasia Szczecb
LUCAN - The Animalistics 4-H
Club went to the Kirkton Veteri-
nary Clinic this week.
The vet's assistant talked about
what the staff does at the clinic and
how to take care of your pet, if
sick. The club also saw a golden
lab which had a blockage and
couldn't eat properly. He was there
to be treated.
At the end of the visit, club mem-
bers each received a booklet about
dog and cat care, which they en-
joyed.
After going back to the Lucan
United Church to adjourn the meet-
ing, the members voted on a new
name for their club, and came up
with the Animalistics. Then the
president adjourned the meeting.
The next meeting will be held at
the Lucan United Church.
The members and leaders of the
club gave special thanks to the
.Kirkton Veterinary Clinic for hay -
