EXETER- Michael Jeromkin, of Exeter, pleaded guilty in court
last Tuesday to having
open liquor in a vehicle.
On February 5, OPP of-
ficers - on routine patrol
observed a pietup truck
in Stephen township go-
ing through a stop sign
onto Highway 21. The
vehicle then turned onto a
private driveway and
both driver and passenger ran.
Jeromkin later went to the OPP and admitted to being the passen-
ger in the vehicle and having open liquor.
He was fined $180 and given three months to pay.
Four accidents reported
EXETER - During the past week
the Exeter OPP investigated four
accidents.
Last Tuesday, Gordon Watson of
Grand Bend, was northbound on
Highway 21 in Hay twp., when he
left the roadway and struck a guide
rail. There were no injuries.
On Wednesday, Beverley Robin-
son of Brucefield, was eastbound
on Highway 84 in Hay township,
when a deer ran out onto the road -

VARNA - The eighth annual
Stanley Township Canoe Rally was
postponed Sunday because of dan-
gerous water conditions.
The Bayfield river was fast and
there was concern it could be dan-
gerous for the inexperienced, said
Jim Kirton, of the Stanley Town-
ship Recreation Committee.
The race has been re -scheduled
for April 18, with registration be-
ginning at noon.

snowstorm when he was met by a
northbound car which had wan-
idered into his lane. Dowler braked
And swerved to avoid this car and
entered the ditch. There were minor
injuries.
On Sunday, police investigated a
two car head-on collision on Con-
cession Rd. 2-3 in Stephen town-
ship. A car driven by Wendy Ray-
mond of Huron Park, collided with
a pickup truck driven by Bradley
Dietrich of RR 3, Dashwood. Three

The Exeter WOTCH program (Western Ontario Therapeutic Community Hostel) held a spring
fashion show Thursday evening at Frenchman's Inn in Exeter. Some of the models posing on
the stairs were (from right) Jennifer Hunter, Jacklyn Wright, Tara Edwards, George Gallant,

Taxpayers could be charged to
connect to storm sewer system
GRAND BEND -Although funding for the rehabili-
tation of Highway 21 in Grand Bend has been ap-
proved by she Ministry of Transportation, there is one
'cost the village taxpayers may have to pick up them -
.selves.
The highway maintenance, which includes repaving
and the improvement of storm drainage, does not pro-
vide for funding for property owners to connect up to
the new storm sewers.
"No property owner is supposed to benefit," said en-
gineer David James who was referring to regulations
under the local Property Improvement Act.
He said the estimated cost for the connections to the
system would be about $40,000 which would either be
picked up by the village or shared among the approxi-
mately 30 owners.
He pointed out a couple of options including one al-
ternative which would be to have just those owners
who wanted to, to connect to the system.
"The disadvantage to that is if someone comes in two
years later and wants it, you may have to dig up the
road."
Another possibility is that if the village decides to
force all the owners to connect, one refusal could mean
a hearing in front of the Ontario Municipal Board.
"I hope there isn't 50 percent objection, but we won't
know until we take it to them," said James of contact-
ing the owners.

EXETER - The provincial hear-
ing investigation into Exeter's po-
lice services will begin next Tues-
day.
Gordon Hampsen from the Onta-
rio Civilian Commission on Police
Services said only one day has been
scheduled so far for the hearings
into the actions of the police servic-
es board and the police chief, but
he said more days will be needed.
"We can't tell really how long it
will take until we come down
there," said Hampsen from his To-
ronto office.
The first day of the hearing into
why the town police chief was re-
moved from duty in September and
later reinstated will begin Tuesday
at 10 a.m. in the town council
chambers. Hampson said he ex •
-
pected much of the presentations
on the first day will be from the
two sides' lawyers.
Other witnesses are expected to
be called to the stand as the hearing
progresses.
Beware when
parking
overnight,
warn police
EXETER - Cars left in public
parking lots overnight aren't neces-
sarily safe, warns the town police
chief.
This came after a car parked on
the South Huron Recreation Centre
lot last Monday night received "ma-
licious damage" at the hands of
some unknown vandals.
Police chief Jack Harkness said
the car suffered scratched paint and
damaged mirrors and was an "easy
victim" for the vandals.
Although the investigation is con-
tinuing, Harkness acknowledged
the police have few leads.
Harkness also noted that while
anti -drunk driving campaigns advo-
cate leaving your car behind and
finding other ways home when im-
paired, this can be a problem if
drivers don't believe their car is
safc.
Harkness also noted that town po-
lice seized two illegal radar detec-
tors from motorists stopped on
Main Street in the past week. One
of them was also found to have
open liquor in the ,car and was
charged accordinai'.
