Warning from fire department
EXETER - The Exeter and Area
Fire Department is conducting a
survey 'of local homes, on the
watch for corroding metal chim-
neys.
The Ontario Fire Marshall's of-
fice has issued a safety warning
about the insulated metal chimneys,
saying they can corrode to the point
where they can fall off a roof or
collapse inside.
Fire -chief Gary Middleton said he
has only seen one problem with
such a chimney, where it collapsed
inside a home, but said the problem
must be takenasriousty.
"I don't think -people look after
metal chimneys likelhey do a nor-
mal flue chimney," Amid Middleton,
noting they still teed=regular clean-
ing and inspection.
The chief said he Nims noticed
some local homeowners • have al-
ready spotted corrosion on their
metal chimneys and replaced them.
The style of chimney is still ap-
proved underthe building code and
are is -still being installed for wood
stove, furnace, and fireplace use.
The Fire Marshall's office says
that studies have found corrosion in
chimneys less .than' three years old.
Corrosion can :allow 'the insulted
liner to•blockihe chimney, causing
a poisonous carbon monoxide
buildup inside°the home.
Sometimes this corrosion can oc-
cur .in ,the concealed spaces where
the chimney passes .through an at-
tic, said Middleton, making damage
invisible unlessa fdIl.inspection is
carried out by a chimney sweep or
heating contractor.
Middleton said while surveying
Exeter homes the .fire ;department
will be ontheaookouttfor corroded
chimneys and lo .also asses the
number of insulated metal chim-
neys intown.
