1-IENSALL - For the past two
years, lceculture owners Ann Rose
and Julian Bayley have been pro-
moting and selling specialty ice
products from their Hensall based
company. Now they have added
something Snice.
Snice is the name of the new
product tine introduced in January.
This crystal clear 300 pound
block of ice has been developed to
provide more attractive sculptures
at weddings, banquets and snow
carnivals.
The name Snice, Rose explained,
combines the reaction heard most
often at bridal and special event ex-
hibits. "People would say, 'That's
Nice'. We heard those words so
many times it began to sound like
one word."
The expansion into ice block pro-
duction was simply to meet a de-
mand, Rose said. Potential buyers
were interested in ice blocks of
similar gaality to the specialty ice
bowls make by Iceculture.
"Most ice blocks on the market
now are cloudy on the inside rather
than clear," Rose said.
This prompted Iceculture to im-
port the necessary equipment from
the United States to produce the
slick or crystal clear ice blocks.
As with the ice bowl, the special-
ized equipment allows air to circu-
late through the water during freez-
ing of the blocks. Rose believes
lceculture is the only company in
eastern Ontario developing this
kind of ice.
The blocks are sold in the region
and spanning outwards to Windso-
rand Toronto. And although Snice
is still in its infancy stage, Rose and
Bayley expect it to become as pop-
ular as the company's ice bowls.
It takes about 48 hours to freeze
the ice blocks in the specialized
equipment. The block is then
thawed to mom temperature before
being carved. This guards against
the 40 inch by 20 by 10 block from

used.
The production of the ice bowls
is a little simpler. The decorations
are added when the ice reaches a
thickness of one an a half inches.
Items such as silk flowers, business
cards, jewellery or coins are insen-
cd for a personalized touch and are
held in place with clamps until the
ice grips the decorations. It takes
between 25 and 48 hours to make a
bowl.
The longevity of these creations
depends on a number of factors in-
cluding room temperature and the
amount of detail in the work. Gen-
erally a piece lasts more than six
hours and can be refrigerated and "The weather is so unpredrk.I.1

tions.
At present lceculture makes four
blocks a week, but Rose said they
are in the midst of expanding pro-
duction. "Block sales are a growing
interest."
They are also in the midst of
compiling a list of carvers to suit
the needs of the client list.
Rose and Bayley arc also looking
towards next winter as they prepare
proposals for ice carnivals in the re-
gion. Bayley sees a strong market
in cities that traditionally had win-
ter carnivals and arc now looking
for alternatives.
Am Rose displays one of lceculture's specialty ice bowls to
be used as a decorative and functional centrepiece.
