EXE'T'ER - Up, up, up. Down,
,down, down and bang.
Competitive figure skaters were
flitting the ice quite hard last week
-at the Exeter Figure Skating Club's
March Break Skating School but
everytime they did, they got up and
tried their spin again.
Some would sit for a moment
and look dowr( at the ice in frustra-
tion or perhaps even wonder why
they had fallen. But the determina-
tion to get it right, always contin-
ued.
While many children were sun-
ning themselves down in Florida
during the long recess from school,
others were shivering and stamping
their feet to keep warm in the are-
na.
"if they didn't want to be here,
'hey wouldn't," said Exeter Figure
ACkating Club coach John Bauman.
Outsiders may think that once the
`4ocaf skating carnival is done, fig -
:Lure skaters pack their blades away
and take it easy. But the determine -
don by those at this year's school is
anything but relaxed.
"They learn a lot every day," said
Exeter Figure Skating Club presi-
dent Katherine Ens.
The school $ave coaches a lot of
time to spend with individual prob-
lems and at one time there would
be no more than a dozen skaters on
the ice at once.

This past weekend, Rebecca was
in Tillsonburg for the Ml-Ontarios,
an event she qualified for after tak-
ing home a first place from the re-
cent Western Ontario sectionals.
In Tillsonburg, she not only took
part in the Junior Bronze Ladies
FreeSkatc, but teamed with 14
year-old Conrad Seaman from Lon-
don in the juvenile pairs.
Rebecca Jennison and her partner Conrad Seaman were busy
practicing at the South. Huron Recreation Centre durk g the Ex-
eter Figure Skating School's March Break School. The two
combined to win a gold medal in pairs at the A11-0ntarlos on
the weekend in Tillsonburg. Jennison also brought home a
fifth place in junior bronze ladies free skate.
"Here they're spoiled because
.they're aren't that many," said Bat-
eman of the 25 skaters at this year's
school. "Some schools have 20 or
30 on the ice at a time."
Ens admitted that the skating
school is primarily for those at a
competitive level and not those
who are just learning.
"March Break .School is mainly
for intermediates, it'snot for begin-
ners," said Ens.
Although this year's school had
only 25 enroled, Ens *said it's still
enough to make it worthwhile.

"I like them both," 'said Rebecca
of the two different events. "I spend
a lot of time on singles."
From Exeter to Strathroy to Ilder-
ton to Thedfond, this talented skater
puts in a lot of time on perfecting
her art.
"She puts in 20 hours a week on
the ice," said her mother Tammy.
That means taking afternoons off
of school from Grand Bend Public
School but so far, she's managed to
keep up.
When asked if she gets tired of
skating and if she ever gets frustrat-
ed about not being able to perform
certain moves, Rebecca said, "may-
be once in a while."
On Thursday, Rebecca and Con-
rad practiced while others watched
and after their, what looked to be
near flawless performance, their
was even a brief ovation.
Skating is a family affair for the
Jennison's of Grand Bend and on
Thursday Rebecca's 14 year-old
sister Amanda concentrated on her
practicing but she did come over
once in a while with her younger
sister just in an attempt to take
away a bit of the pressure.
