Down, ,down, down and bang. Competitive figure skaters were flitting the ice quite hard last week -at the Exeter Figure Skating Club's March Break Skating School but everytime they did, they got up and tried their spin again. Some would sit for a moment and look dowr( at the ice in frustra- tion or perhaps even wonder why they had fallen. But the determina- tion to get it right, always contin- ued. While many children were sun- ning themselves down in Florida during the long recess from school, others were shivering and stamping their feet to keep warm in the are- na. "if they didn't want to be here, 'hey wouldn't," said Exeter Figure ACkating Club coach John Bauman. Outsiders may think that once the `4ocaf skating carnival is done, fig - :Lure skaters pack their blades away and take it easy. But the determine - don by those at this year's school is anything but relaxed. "They learn a lot every day," said Exeter Figure Skating Club presi- dent Katherine Ens. The school $ave coaches a lot of time to spend with individual prob- lems and at one time there would be no more than a dozen skaters on the ice at once. "Here they're spoiled because .they're aren't that many," said Bat- eman of the 25 skaters at this year's school. "Some schools have 20 or 30 on the ice at a time." Ens admitted that the skating school is primarily for those at a competitive level and not those who are just learning. "March Break .School is mainly for intermediates, it'snot for begin- ners," said Ens. Although this year's school had only 25 enroled, Ens *said it's still enough to make it worthwhile.
