Working harder for customers
is Huron Tractor 1993 theme
EXETER - "Working Harder to Serve You" is the theme for 1993 for
Huron Tractor operating three John Deere farm machinery dealerships in
Exeter, Blyth and Thamesford.
Huron Tractor was started in 1961 by Jack Van Bussel and Harry Win-
ters and in the next few years they were joined by Herb Verbeek, Earl
Long and Bruce Hasselback.
Five years ago Huron Tractor commenced an ownership transition peri-
od.
Now operating the business are partners Frank Winters, Peter Hak-
voort, John Rudderham, Henry Winters and Paul Van Oss.
While the new owners bring different work experiences with them, they
will continue the same type of philosophy of better customer service built
up by the original owners.
General Manager Peter Hakvoort says his firm's Mission Statement puts
the customer first. He continues, "Through a skilled staff and efficient fa-
cilities, Huron Tractor will continue to provide a full range of quality
equipment and a superior level of services to the ever changing needs of
our farm and outdoor power equipment customers."
Huron Tractor is one of the largest volume John Deere -dealers in Canada
with the largest dollar value of John Deere farm equipment sales in Eastern
Canada.
Frank Winters says the success of Huron Tractor is largely due to dedi-
cation of long term employees and a commitment to training. All staff are
participating in intensive management and John Deere training programs.
Huron Tractor is recognized by farmers from alt parts of Ontario for its
high quality of used farm equipment. The Trade Barn, located at the rear
of the Exeter north facility is open all year round for viewing of recondi-
tioned tractors and combines.
Winters says with the Trade Barn and used equipment on display inside,
"We are able to offer equipment that retains its value. We provide warran-
ty and confidence, not surprises."
With farmers moving to conservation tillage, there will be a trend to-
wards fewer machines on the farm, but these machines will be more tech-
nologically advanced. John Deere continues to be aggressive with research
and development to provide new products. Recent new products have in-
cluded the new 9000 series combine, new tractors ranging in horsepower
from 40 to 400 HP as well as 750 no -till and 455 minimum tillage drills.
Real emphasis is put on keeping farmers' machinery running during the
use season. With a total staff of over 60 people, 35 are dedicated to provid-
ing service parts and service repairs. One of the keys to keepingtlr farm-
ers profitable says Winters is preventative maintenance on their hin-
ery. A harvest season like 1992 shows how important well maintained
equipment can be. A commitment to Annual Service Inspections in the
off-season will keep the machines working in the field.
These inspections are carried out during the winter months in 20 bays of
modem shop space and using high-tech diagnostic equipment. Quality in-
spections guarantee lesser down-time in the important harvesting season
and increase the resale value of equipment. When each piece of equipment
has been inspected it receives a "Seat of Reliability" saying, "This machine
has had its Annual Service Inspection".
The Huron Tractor parts inventory has a 95 percent fill rate as Peter Hak-
voort says, "With John Deere we have the best parts distribution system in
the world and can provide 99 percent delivery the next day. We have a
parts inventory in excess of $1 million in Exeter."
In addition, Huron Tractor has five service vehicles on the road. They
also specialize in rebuilding hydrostatic transmissions and can fabricate
chains, hoses and fittings for agricultural and commercial uses.
Huron Tractor is the North American distributor for Geringhoff corn
heads and has established a network of 28 dealers across Ontario and the
U.S. corn belt. The unique features of this corn head are that it chops stalks
and picks nom.at the sametimeand fits all makes of combines.
The local firm is also the Ontario, disftibutor for Crary air reefs and chaff
spreaders. They can be mounted on combines for white beans, soybeans
and all grains. The end result is more bushels in the bins.
Huron Tractor continues to get input from farmers. Winters says, "In
- terms of business decisions we seek out the customer's needs and address
.them. It's important to anticipate their future requirements. Knowing what
customers will want allows us to provide better services. We keep our eyes
.and ears open to the needs of the farmer. Our success will be directly relat-
ed to how well we 'listen to our customers'."
