In a very busy weekend in which they played three games in three nights, the Broncos found them- selves eliminated from the Ontario Minor Hockey Association 'CC' playoffs. Making it all the way to the quar- ter -finals this year, the Broncos were beaten 3-2 by Ridgetown Sun- day night. Exeter played another excellent game but couldn't beat the hot Ridgetown netminder in overtime. Ridgetown's Luke Hopkins who had seven goals in the first game of the series, scored the winner with 5:31 remaining in overtime. Wayne Cole had both Exeter goals while Chad Monteith and Ja- son Grenicr picked up the assists. Exeter 8,'Ridgetovn>'. - After losing the first two games of the series, the Broncos bounced back and won two straight. After winning Friday night in Ridgetown, Exeter won big, 8-1 at the South Huron Recreation Centre on Satur- day night. The hosts led 4-0 at the end of the first period on goals by Cole, Scott Keys and two by Chad Mon- teith. Keys who had a hat trick, net- ted his first of the night when he came quickly out of the penalty box and went in all the way to score on a breakaway from the red line. In the second frame, Cole got his second, while in the final period, Keys scored twice, and Grenier slipped one in on the shortsidc. Exeter goalie Jeff Gooch was outstanding and lost his shutout bid late in the third period to Ridge - town's Jeff VanHeeswijk. Picking up assists in Saturday's game were Jared Bourne with two, Monteith, Grenier, Tyler Taylor, Wheatley 9knocks off Generals W HEATLEY - A pair of week- end losses meant eliminationfor the defending OMHA midget 'CC' champions. Sunday afternoon in Wheatley, the Exeter RSD Generals were beaten 5-3 to end their OMHA playoffs. A FEW POINTS ABOUT THE NEW SWEETHEARTRULES ROCKET RICHARD, the BABE RUTH of hockey, or as the ROCKET said when I called him that "You mean Babe Ruth was the Rocket Richard of Baseball," must shake his head in sorrow when he secs his holy grail of Hockey (by that I mean 50 goals in one season) being torn asunder (into pieces) by every Tom, Dick and Harry. As I write this, fourteen players are on target to net 50 goals and listen to this one. Last year only nine guys got a 100 points and this year it looks like 24 players will score a 100 plus points. The " DER, •GENTLER•RULES"-are workingand no check hock - 1 id• y: 'The players ,are._calling -this_ ,he :EUROPEAN igusavad lott'arlhe evidernse.:iaaiitourely, coirtcidsrtce that 3.,EU- NS, MOGILNY, BURE AND SALANNE are blossoming the same year under these sweetheart rules"? I think not! Changing the rules for more points only cheapens the achieve- ment of getting them. It's like making homeruns cheap by bringing in the fences. ALL-STAR GAME NEEDS SOME CHANGES We just have to do something about the NHL showpiece... The ALL-STAR GAMES. It's a shame people see this embarrassment on NBC because the people the NHL are trying to sell on hockey have to be turned -off by that display. Irealize that Hockey and Foot- ball are "hard to sell" when it comes to ALL-STAR games because they are a hitting sport, but let's find new ways to get the players a little serious about the contest. GEORGE GROSS, sports editor of the TORONTO' SUN sug- gests EUROPEAN players against NORTH AMERICAN players. That sounds good, but I'd like to see the Stanley Cup champs against a "real" all-star team comprised of guys who aren't just there be- cause every team has to send a player. HAMMERING OUT A NEW ARBITRATION DEAL... FINALLY! Now the NHL and the PLAYER'S ASSOCIATION are finally on the right track of arbitration. The former way was a joke ending with the CALGARY FLAMES arbitration of ex -Flame DOUG GILMOUR. While Gilmour was skat- ing around in warm-up with the FLAMES before the exhibition game, he looked up and saw the arbitrator of his case sitting with the CALGARY FLAMES brass. Nice eh? The way it works now is that the players now pick 4 guys and the clubs pick 4 guys as arbi- trators. When there is a case, 3 arbitra- are put forward as arbitrators. The then pick one, the club picks .td if both sides pick the same name, then that's who the arbitrator is. If they each pick a different guy, then the 3rd guy (who wasn't chosen) handles the cast. It sounds like a KING SOLOMON deal but the thing about this way is that a decision will come in two days and that's the way it should be. Jim Dietrich also scored in this period with the assists to Derek Beckett and Mark Glavin. The third period saw Farquhar team with Mark Brintnell. 'Three stars of the game for Exet- er, Dalrymple, Matt Godbolt and Dietrich. Wheatley 2, ExeterVi This game started off on the wrong foot right from the begin- ning as Exeter's Ben Armstrong was hit hard into the boards just 14 seconds into the game. It was a physical contest as Brian Gardner delivered a heavy hit to Wheatley's Derek Lamb. But Lamb dished out a few of his own and drew Generals' Rob Kobayashi into a spearing penalty. Just while that infraction was ex- piring, Dalrymple took an elbow- , ling penalty and Jack Pickle scored "ttomake it 1-0. In the second period, with Gard- ner in the box for cross-checking, Pickle notelied,44ipower- play goal of 1j1¢,,,gam.erals' goalie Darren Kints was ejected late in the third period and received a match penalty for buttending.
