World Day
.ot Pr-ayer in
Grand Bend
By Loreen Gill
GRAND BEND - The World
-Day of Prayer was held at the
Grand Bend United Church on Fri-
day, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. This in-
teresting service had been prepared
by seven women from Guatemala,
and through it, they were appealing
to Christians around the world to
unite with them to be people of
God and instruments of healing to
the suffering masses everywhere.
Guatemala is a very poor country in
Central America whose people
have been suffering from social ills
and oppression for centuries.
Lucy Sage led the service and
was assisted by Hazel Broad, Irene
Kennedy and the Grand Cove La-
dies' choir, with Idella Gabel at the
organ. Participating also were la-
dies from Dashwood United, Im-
maculate Heart of Mary, St. John's
By -the -Like and The Church of
God. •
Guest speaker, Alma Langford of
Exeter, spoke about the immense
social ills and "a heap of problems"
both at home and abroad. She chal-
lenged the ladies to unite with the
Guatemalan ladies and become in-
struments of healing to the suffer-
ing people of the world. She told
an interesting story of young
school children who with their lit-
tle pails, moved a huge pile of sand
-to their sandbox. She reminded the
audience that, often, the efforts of a
single person seem really insignifi-
cant but when we all carry "our
pails" and work together great
things can be accomplished. A so-
cial time followed the service.

Huron Country playhouse Guild
holds luncheon meeting in GB
GRAND BEND - Members of
;.die Huron Country Playhouse
:Guild met .at a luncheon meeting
-.in -the Colonial Hotel Restaurant
:.on Wednesday. February 24. The
$business was chaired by Guild
;j residdnt Mary Metcalfe.
' Lillian Newton volunteered to
:xhair a new "Meet and Greet" hos-
--pitality committee. The Guild
agreed to act on a proposal from
. Artistic Director Max Phymer, to
offer welcome information and
friendly faces to visitors at the
Playhouse. A group of volunteers
would take turns, coming about 1
1R hours early for each perfor-
mance all season, to serve in that
capacity.
Metcalfe introduced Bob Tum -
bull, Chair of the Building Com-
mittee for the Playhouse Board of
Directors, as the guest speaker.
Turnbull sincerely thanked the
Guild members, on behalf of the
Playhouse Board for all their dedi-
cation, hard work and financial
support over the years.
He outlined the role of the Build-
ing Committee in their 5 -year
plan, to supervise the spending and
control the building and safety as-
pects of this major reconstruction
project. The Playhouse is now the
third largest summer theatre in On-
tario and it still runs "in the black"
with an ability to draw talented
performers from across Canada for
casting calls. Ongoing improve-
ments to facilities are now re-
quired to reflect the expanding role
of the theatre in the community
and underscore its commitment to
excellence. said Turnbull.
The first phase of the building
project revolved mainly around
fire/safety standards, with a new
sprinkler, fire alarm system, fire
doors, ramps, and emergency
lighting. The second phase in-
cludes the demolishing of the orig-
inal old barn to build a new Play-
house 11, a new rehearsal hall, and
better washrooms, kitchen and bar
facilities.
There are also plans for a new
auditorium, all to be built between
1993-1995. The third phase, from
1995 to 1997 calls for new admin-
istration offices and renovations to
the farmhouse/gift shop, with an ef-
fort to keep the rural -barn atmos-
phere throughout.
Five more acres will be pur-
chased at the back for additional
parking, including extensive land-
scaping and a large country garden.
The box office will be complete-
ly computerized to handle tickets
and reservations, with the assis-
tance of a 510,000 donation from
the London HCP Guild Founda-
tion, which was received on March
4, helping to cover the cost of soft-
wares. Steel for a new fly tower
has been donated by a major corpo-
ration covering 65 percent of the
steel required by the architect.
Four and a half million dollars
have been provided or received
from government grants, the Play-
house Foundation, corporations,
businesses, fund raisers land local
donations to cover most of the
costs of this huge reconstruction
project, demonstrating the kind of
committed support the Playhouse'
receives these long plans reveal the
goal of the Playhouse Board, to
produce a first rate year round
theatrical facility in our community
by the fall of 1996. Turnbull again
thanked all those who made it pos-
sible.

meeting on Monday, March 29, 1993 at 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Bend Municipal Office at 4 Onta-
rio Street, North, to consider a proposed Zoning By-law Amendment under section 34 of the Plan-
ning Act, R.S.O. 1990.
The proposed zoning By-law Amendment would change the zone category on the subject lands in
part of Lot 4, Lake Road East Concession, Village of Grand Bend, owned by 743523 Ontario Lim-
ited. The site is located on the east side of Highway 21, immediately north of the Merrywood
Meadows residential development.
The proposed amendment would change the zone category on the subject lands from the "Rural
Intensive (A.2) Zone" and the "Residential (R.1) Zone" to a zone which would permit the 4.1 acre
(1.6 hectare) site to be developed for a multiple family residential development, and to the "Natu-
ral Conservation (NC.1) Zone". The NC.1 zone would apply 10 a 23 metre (75 foot) vegetated buf-
fer which would be maintained along Highway 21.
The proposed amendment would permit the development of the site for a 27 unit condominium
development. The residential portion of the property would be placed in a holding category. The
holding symbol would not be removed until the municipality is satisfied that suitable servicing is
available for the site.
The key maps show more particularly the affected lands.
