To beat the Irish, Jv
DePrest and Moore
have to be stopped
LUCAN - It's been a long time since the Lucan Irish met the Belmont
Pests, in fact the last matchup was way back on January 10.
In their five meetings, it's no surprise the Irish, who topped the west di-
vision regular season standings with beat the Pests four times and tied
them once.
For the Pests to stop the Irish in the playoffs is simple, prevent veteran
centre Greg DePrest and rpokie rightwinger Steve Moore from scoring.
They have been paired with big leftwinger Sean Kaczmarek. Another
rookie, this guy goes to the front of the net and he's tough to move.
As far as toughness goes, the Stanton twins, Jim and Jeff can mix it up
or take care of the heavy banging whenever need be.
Lucan, 34-5-2 vs. Belmont, 10-28-2
What Lucan has is a lot of blue collar players. Guys who do a lot of
work, don't always get a lot of credit and provide a balanced supporting
cast for DePrest and Moore.
Jason Glasser, Andy Ross, Jason Wilson and Steve Snider are all grind-
ers.
On the blueline, defensemen coach Jamie Pearce has done a lot of jug-
gling but has come up with a group, led by veteran Kevin Leitch, who
make it hard to get to the net.
Leitch is probably one of the strongest players in the league. He's a 21
year-old and his maturity has certainly helped this club. But while defense -
men are supposed to make sure the puck doesn't go in the net, Ed VanKer-
korle makes sure it goes in the other end.
In his third year, VanKerkoerle was third in scoring for the Irish.
Between the pipes, Eoin McInerney, right out of bantam and Brent Lew-
is a seasoned puckstopper, have made a few Lucan fans put the legendary
Bob Szabo a little farther back in their minds.
Late arrivals will
help Hawks
EXETER - You never know what to expect from the Exeter Hawks.
They are hot then cold and then just when you think they are going to
dip in the standings, they pull some magic outof their bag of tricks.
That magic has come in the form of Kurt Ropp, then John Bell, then
Brandon Ropp then Derek Shackleton.
In the six games before the all-star contest, the Hawks struggled with a
2-3-1 record. From Jan. 15 to Feb. 14, they were 6-3-4. But they lost their
last three games of the regular season. Hot and then cold.
Rookie Sean McCann started off on fire but cooled down and then he
was sidelined by an injury. He should score a bunch in the playoffs.

.Veteran Ray Gbutlriilttt has been a very pleasaptiatt oradiheglawks
have to consider tiim for their Most Valuable Pfaye3r Avrwt''Wl n Kurt
Ropp appeared on the scene, he was teamed with his long-time mates from
St. Marys, Cousineau and Dan Ryan.
If all three are in the lineup, they will really make things happen. Take
Sean McCann, line him with brother Todd and Robinson and you have an-
other very high scoring line.
Shackleton really hustles and a line with him, Paul Manders and very
speedy John O'Hara would be a real threat.
On the blueline, the Hawks added John Bell late in the season and if he
gets back into junior playing condition, he'll be a very big plus. Larry
Lewis has been injured a lot so Jamie Cornish has really had to pick up the
slack.
Rookies Mark Lynn and Jason McBride play like they have been around
the league for two or three years.
Brandon Ropp, another late addition to the club, started off hot but as of
late has struggled. Look for him and Clint McCann to alternate. Don't be
surprised if McCann gets real hot in the post -season.

Second season underway
Snider snags two in opener

LUCAN - It was no surprise the
Lucan Irish won Game One of their
best -of -seven quarter -final west di-
vision series against Belmont Mon-
day night.
But what was a surprise was
Steve Snider scoring two goals and
setting up another in a 9-2 victory.
The rightwinger who had just
seven goals during the regular sea-
son, helped the Irish to a 2-1 first
period lead and a 7-2 cushion after
40 minutes.
His second tally of the opening
frame, coming with abotit four
minutes left, came after he rang a
shot high off the post and then fol-
lowed up on his own rebound.
"It ' came straight back," said
Snider.
He came very close on the same
shift to netting a hat trick.
"I tried that shift but I was just
out their playing my usual game,"
said the strong checker.
Leftwinger Shawn Kaczmarek
had a big game as he scored twice
and set up two more while Andy
Ross, Jason Wilson, Keith Robson,
Chris Chatcr and Steve Moore also
connected. Moore added two as-
sists while Greg DePrest helped set
up four goals.
Lucan coach Ken Needham was
quite pleased to see Snider help out
with the scoring.
"Those guys (the Snider. Wilson,
Ross line) have to scone.. There is
no doubt they are going to score,"
said Needham.
Snider scored just 20 seconds
into the game but Belmont's Andy
Beauie evened the count and them
Snider got his second.
"We knew they'd be out to get us,
they had nothing to lose," said
Snider.
Needham was a little surprised
his team was only up by a goal af-
ter 20 minutes.
"We missed some chances it
could have been more, we iq k it
to them.'
The second period saw DePrest
go down hard after taking a bit of
lumber and from then on the game
got quite physical. The Irish had 20
minutes in minor penalties in the
middle frame compared to 12 by
the visitors.
"They'll ( Belmont) be like that
(more physical) in their own barn,"
said Needham of the physical
game.
In the second period, Ross and
Wilson scored just 19 seconds
apart and with 48 seconds left in
the period Kaczmaerk got his fust
and then 22 seconds apart Moore
connected.
Belmont's Jamie Dance who set
up the first goal for his team scored
in the second period.
With the second period penalties,
Lucan defenseman Kevin Leitch
saw a lot of ice time. While killing
a penalty, forward Scott Riddell
dropped down to block a shot.
After sitting out several weeks
due to an injury, Jason Reidhead is
back in the Lucan lineup and he set
up a goal in Mondays win. He was
put between the Stanton brothers,
Jeff and Jim in a lineup that had 12
forwards and six defensemen.
"We may have to juggle the lines
but I don't want to upset things to
much," said Needham.
Brent Lewis, the west division
goalie with the best average during
1
the regular season, was solid stop-
ping 24 shots. At the other end,
Belmont's Matt Wilson was kept
busy as he saw 27 shots come his
way before giving way to former
Irish netminder Mark Dunn who
played well and allowed just one
8081.
Game Two of the series goes to-
night in Lucan at 8:15 p.m.
Two goals

in 5-2 win
EXETER - The regular season of
the Ontario Development League
concluded Friday night at the
South Huron Recreation Centre
where the visiting Lucan Irish beat
the .xeter Hawks 5-2.
Despite having four midget
players in the lineup, the Irish won
their 33rd regular season game of
the year.
The west division's leading scor-
er Greg DePrest led the winners
with two goals and an assist while
Steve Snider, Brian Schuyler and
Jason Wibon also connected.
For the Hawks, who suffered
their third straight loss, Ray Cousi-
neau and John Bell scored with two
assists for Dave Dalrymple.

can Irish centre Greg DePrest was denied the west di-
vision Most Valuable Player award.

quet, that prestigious top player award went to Mitch-
