New office for alternatives
GUELPH - Green Plan funding
of S7 million has been awarded to
establish a pest -management alter-
natives office (PMAO), says Keith
Solomon, director of the Centre for
Toxicology at the University of
Guelph.
The office is.designed to promote
judicious use of chemicalsend-pro-
mote alternatives to harmful pesti-
cide practices, says :Solomon, who
chairs the PMAO's board of direc-
tors. One of its priorities will be to
seek alternatives for highly toxic
pesticides or those that are persis-
tent and mobile in the environment,
he says.
The creation of a PMAO was rec-
ommended in a ,recent Agriculture
Canada review of the pesticide reg-
ulation process in Canada. The re-
view's recommendations were
geared to making the process more
efficient and environmentally sus-
tainable.
The focus of the office during the
first years will be largely agricultu-
.rat,says Soloman. "It will .ltave.im-
kp rtieit ` benefits' for soluhWWstein
-Ontario. We hope to be able to give
fanners better tools to manage agri-
culture in a sustainable way."
The PMAO's board of directors is
made up of representatives from
farming, agricultural research, busi-
ness, environmental and consumer
groups.
Funded by the Green Plan over
the next four years, the office aims
to:
• Promote the use and encourage
the development of viable and eco-
logically sound strategies that mini-
mize risk of harm to health, safety
and the environment, while opti-
mizing pest control;
• Develop policies for the promo-
tion of alternative, ecologically
sound pest -management strategies,
and promote and fund relevant re-
search;
• Consult with and provide advice
on alternative pest -control strate-
gies to the authorities responsible
for the regulation and use of pest-

control products as appropriate;
• Work with government, pesti-
cide users, the alternatives sector
and other stakeholders to help set
targets and develop strategic plans
for the appropriate reduction of
pesticide use in all sectors, includ-
ing agricultural, forestry, industrial,
commercial lawn and turf, and do-
mestic.
As an independent corporation,
the PMAO will stay at arm's length
from government, says Solomon.
This gives it more credibility and
allows it to make its findings pub-
lic. "Being independent will give it
greater responsibility to both the
public and Agriculture Canada."
The office will communicate to
user groups and the public any
progress in the development and
use of alternative ecologically
sound strategies for pest control, he
says. A workshop to set prioritie§'
for research was held February 21
to 23 in Toronto.

'TORONTO - The 1993 Canadian
Imernational Farm Equipment
Show proved once again that it is
Canada's premiere agricultural
showcase. Attendance was excel-
lent and exhibitors were extremely
pleased, said Show Manager, Les-
ley Nicholson. The Show was held
January 19 to 22 at the Toronto In-
ternational Centre.
Although many exhibitors ex-
pressed their preference for the ear-
lier January dates, show manage-
ment, was unable to book this
earlier time frame next year be-
cause the Toronto International

month of January up to the year
