Ingersoll easy prey for Exeter Mohaws
EXETER - Two games are never the same it seems. Even when you've
got the same two teams going head-to-head.
Last Tuesday, the Exeter Mohawks and the Ingersoll B's had a penalty
free Southwestern Ontario Senior 'A' Hockey League playoff game.
Saturday in Ingersoll, there were 44 minutes of penalties whistled and
three players ejected. Despite the different games, the Mohawks are one
game away from eliminating the B's.
"They got a little fiesty down there Saturday night," said Exeter coach
Dave Revington.
Mohawks 8, B's 2
In the opening game of the series last Tuesday night in Exeter, Gard
Brooks netted four goals in an 8-2 win. Dale Gibbon connected twice, and
added an assist, with singles from Jeff Shipley and Joe Scherer.
Mohawks 11, B's 1
Saturday in Ingersoll, the visiting Mohawks built up a 2.1 first period
lead but were up 6-1 after 40 minutes.
A balanced scoring.attack saw Sffier.e feiid the way with three goals and
a pair of assists while Tim Shields netted two and helped out on two oth-
ers. Kevin McArter, Richard Hawkins, Paul Barton, Shipley, Brooks and
Ron Goodhand also connected.
The second period saw both Greg Snyder and Rob Kingshott who rarely
engage in fisticuffs, ejected. Goalie Trevor Hunter played well, making 36
saves and allowing only one goal.
Mohawks 8, B's 2
Ingersoll's Brad Moon was a thorn in the B's side as the callup from the
junior ranks had three slashing penalties and was also given a ten minute
misconduct. He was later ejected for three suck infractions.
On the scoreboard side of things, Shields led the Mohawks with a goal
and four assists. Also scoring were Hawkins and Kingshott with two,
Shipley, Goodhand and Barton.

Little work for Irish defence
By Fred Groves

LUCAN - Following the Lucan
Irish's game with the visiting North
Middlesex Stars Wednesday night,
the Irish posted a comfortable 2.83
goals against average.
Not only have goaltenders Brent
Lewis and Eoin McInerney come
up big, but the defense have really
done their job as well.
While they had little work to do
in Wednesday's 13-3 win, other
times they have been what has kept
this club in first place in the OHA
Junior Development League's west
division.
Against the Stars however, coach
Ken Needham was forced to move
captain Andy Ross back to the
blueline due to a shortage of bod-
ies. Craig Brown is still injured and
midget Matt Munro was unavaila-
ble.
"Brown's going to be back and
we have Matt Munro so we'll be
fine unless a couple get hurt and
that's always everyone's concern,"
said Needham.
Chris Chater, although he said he
did not have a good game, played
alongside Ross and the two man-
aged to keep the Stars at bay.
"He's a natural good hockey
player," said Coater of Ross.
The Irish were led by the seven -
point perfonmarrce of their leading
scorer Greg DePrest while Steve
Moore had a hat trick, including
his 30th of the season, plus two as-
sists and defenseman Kevin Leitch
added a goal and four assists.
Also scoring were Jim Stanton
and Scott Riddell with a pair each,
Sean Kaczmarek, Paul O'Shea and
Steve Snider.
Leftwingers Kaczmarek and Jeff
Stanton both used their size advan-
tage to get in close to the Stars' net.
"This is a definite advantage if
they get in their and use it (size),"
said Needham. "We try and get the
other guys to do it but they (Kacz-
marek and Stanton) seem to enjoy
it."
It was only 4-2 for the Irish after
the fust period and 6-3 at the end
of 40 minutes of play. Jeremy
Ross, Paul Woodburn and Mark
VanGeffen scored for North Mid-
dlesex.
Chater was kind of surprised thc
way the Stars played and noted
they usually come after the Irish
right pt the start.
"It's hard to stay in the game like
this," said Chater of mental concen-
tration. "But we have to do what
we have to do to get ready for the
playoffs."
Chat& like several other Lucan
Irish players have played for Lon-
don high school teams in the past
and the second -year defenseman is
noticing there is a difference.
"I'm used to playing high school
hockey which is 30 games includ-
ing tournaments. Here it's 40 and
it's hard to get up for some games."
The Irish were up in the third pe-
riod against the Stars as they
poured in six goals including one
with 11 seconds left and one with
only rue ticks on the clock.
Irish 6, Cenjepgirel 2
The highlight of Friday's game in
Seafurth, the 31st win of the season
for the Irish, was DePrest hitting
the 100 -point mark.
His assist on Ed VanKerkoerle's
goal, DePrest's fourth setup of the
night, gave the veteran centreman a
very memorable milestone. Moore
had another hat trick while Jason
Wilson and Kaczmarek also con-
nected.

DePrest had a goal and an assist
while Jim Stanton also connected.
"We were flat and Mt. Brydges
was up for 'the game," said Lucan
manager Ken Freeman. "The score
was 3-2 and we were starting to
play not to bad."

corth
Middlesex Stars of the OHA
Junior Development League
have had their trouble win-
ning games but nevertheless,
the arena in Parkhill has
brimmed with enthusiasm.
Wednesday night in Lucan, after the Irish soundly beat the
Stars, I approached Stars' -captain Paul Woodburn and I said
it's too bad his team won't be making the playoffs.
The west division of the Junior loop is comprised of nine
teams, eight make the playoffs. As of the writing of this col-
umn, the Stars were still trying to finish in the top eight.
Woodbum seemed to take offense to my suggestions, and
really, I don't blame him. After all, the Stars have worked
hand all year and you are bound to struggle in your inaugural
season, but the spirit amongst the players is still thc .
"We still think we are going to make the playoffs. We have
three games left, two against Belmont and we've beaten them
twice this year," said Woodburn.
The Stars' dressing mom seemed fairly relaxed after
Wednesday's loss, these guys have come accustomed to going
away on the short end of the score.
"I don't think most of the guys know what Junior 'D' hockey
is," said Woodburn who was with the Lucan Irish last season.
"They haven't been on a real winning team to know what it
takes to win."
He said when the team comes to play, they do well, and can
keep up with the tougher teams in the league.
When the Stars first applied to the Ontario Hockey Associa-
tion, they wanted to become Junior 'C', but the OHA said sor-
ry guys, it's 'D' or nothing.
So the executive in Parkhill went 'D' and in their first home
game of the season back in October, lost a very close 4-3
game to the Irish.
That night, the fans were thrilled not only to see a competi-
tive team, but they were happy just to see junior hockey come
to their community.
It's kind of like the Senators. At times, they have moments
of brilliance, like when they beat the Montreal Canadiens.
And as far as fan support is concerned, it's tough to get a seat
in Ottawa.
While Woodburn probably won't be with the team next year
on a full-time basis because he is going off to university, the
Stars' first captain wishes the club well in the future.
"Hopefully well get a couple of better players and keep the
same coach. He (Randy McIntyre) is probably the best coach
in the league."
Woodburn admits in order to keep the fans coming to the
Parkhill Arena, they will have to win a few more games next
year.
Who knows what can happen? Look at what the Alvinston
Flyers have done. That's a team that did an about-face and
went from being one pf the team's doormats to having a testa -
Mite shot at winning the west division.
Taking an organization and buildingit-# omithe ground up
is very hard work. Twenty years from now when the Stars are
still going strong, I wonder how many people in that commu-
nity will still remember the men and women who put up the
money, volunteered their time and of the players who were on
the first Stars' squad.
From the sidelines:.—The next few weeks are very busy
around this area, not only with hockey playoffs but with other
events as well. On February 28, Tyndall's Karate Club is host-
ing a karate tournament at the South Huron Recreation Centre
