Manila veteran Pikul is primed for playoffs
T -A staff,
'EXETER - Last night the Exeter Mohawks entailed the Southwestern
Ontario Senior 'A' Hockey League playoffs and once again Saalic Rick Pi-
kul will be looked upon to lead the way.
The defending provincial champions hosted the Ingersoll B's and are in
Ingersoll on Saturday and return to Exeter on Sunday for a 7:30 p.m.
game.
Sunday night at the South Huron Recreation Centre in their final regular
season game, the Mohawks skated to an easy 7-3 win over the Dorchester
Dolphins. Tex,- win, the 18th of the season for the Mohawks, has them fin-
ishing second behind the Petrolia Victorians.
A premier puckstopper in the league, Pikul did not allow a goal against
the Dolphins in the first 40 minutes.
Look for him again to get a lot of the work in the playoffs.
"Pikul will start and he'll probably play the first couple of games," said
Exeter coach Dave Revington.
Looking ahead to the playoffs, Pikul noticed the players are not very in-
tense yet.
"We wan 'it'atf1ast yaty and the Intensity isn't there for that 'amen.
We're just not geeing theaame guys out every night and that's tough," said
Pikul.
Not In the lineup Sunday ',were Jeff Shipley, Greg Snyder and Scott
Pfaff.
Pikul made several big saves against the Dolphins and seemed to be in
playoff shape. The three Dorchester goals in the third period didn't seem to
bother him.
"When you're up six or seven goals there is going to be a bit of a let
down. I still made three or four goals saves in the third period. The goals
they got in the third, they could have gotten in first two periods."
Pikul said there is not a lot of pressure on him to perform well in the
playoffs. He added it is a team effort.
"If I play well it will filter through the rest of the team. Trevor (Hunter)
is a good young goalie and he'll play games in the playoffs."
Exeter led the Dolphins 2-0 as Kevin McArter let go with a snap shot
which went up high on Darryl Bond and he followed that up with an ice
level blast.
Rob Kingshott
made it 3-0 and although the game sheet

gave Tim

!pubic alas* the ltt+swds, t at the net and the puck squeezed across the
goal crease right on to Kingshou's stick.
Just 13 seconds later Dale gibbon gave the hosts a 4-0 lead after 20 min-
utes. Shields and Kingshott scored in the second frame before the Dol-
phins came to life in the third.
The final periods saw Tim Duff score twice for the Dolphins with one
from Scou MacDonald. Richard Hawkins answered for the Mohawks.
Despite the win, Revington did not seem very excited.
"This was a game which didn't mean anything to either team in the
standings. Of course everyone wants some momentum going into the
playoffs."
"We haven't played well the last couple of games," said Revington
whose team edged Lakeshore 8-6 and lost 3-0 to the Vics the last two out-
ings.
Exeter defenseman Barry Baynham broke a skate blade as a result of a
shot. Dale Timmermans returned to the Lineup and had a couple of good
shots at the net.
Mohawk moments: Dorchester's Trevor Ladds upset more than a
couple of the Exeter players with his style of play...Petrolia will now play
Elora of the north league. The reason for this is to see which league will
have the home advantage in the Ontario finals...T-A three stars: 1. Exet-
er's Rik Pikul 2. Dorchester's Tim Duff 3. Exeter's Kevin McArt-
er...Ptayoff structure has Dunnville against Strathroy and Aylmer meets
Dorchester.
