E'X1;'li'ER - Weather got you down? Can't find the right time to exercise?,
Well, why not try hall walking?
`The South Huron District High School is now open weekdays and even-
ings for those who want to keep up their walking program but not battle
the cold, nasty weather.
"The reason we set it up, is so people can walk before going to work,"
said South Huron Recreation Centre rec director Lynne Farquhar.
She recently went through the halls of the high school and marked out
two different courses. One includes both the ground and upper floors in
which four laps of the course is equal to one kilometre while six laps is a
one -mile distance.
For those who do not want to battle the stairs, six laps on the ground
floor make up one kilometre while nine laps is a mile.
Farquhar said there are several people already using the school at night
to get in their regular exercise. It also gives some a feel of security.
"It's so dark on the streets this time of year," said Farquhar.
There are.some simple rules to follow when using the school; park at the
rec centre and walk over to the high school and, once in the school, please
take your boots off.
"There are some who have been walking there in the evening. I suggest
they change out of the their snow boots and into running shoes."
Copies of the walking route at the school may be obtained at the rcc cen-
tre in Exeter.
Linda Marsden who works in Exeter, brought the idea of indoor walking
to Farquhar and agreed that weather conditions this time of year make it
difficult to walk outside.
"You can do as many (laps) as you want and not have to worry about
falling on the ice," said Marsden.
She hopes to put some signs around town encouraging others to walk at
the school.
Marsden is originally from Ohio where she said the malls would open
early in the morning and many seniors would walk -inside.
(Always consult a physician before beginning any regular exercise pro-
gram.)
