K8lAOke wins flxed?
Dear Editor:
1 would like to draw attention to
something I experienced on Satur-
day night (January 23). Berne
friends and I decided to go out to a
certain bar in town to try our luck
at a karnoke contest. I won't mane
the bar but I'm sure that everyone
can figure out which one in Exeter
has Karaoke on Saturdays.
Upon arriving we sat down and
did the socially acceptable thing to
do in a bar - we drank. This, how-
ever, is not the important point
that 1 am trying to make. During
the next three or four hours we
sang and drank and the contest
winner began to separate from the
rest of the pack. We thought that
the outcome was inevitable. As it
turned out the outcome was inevi-
table, but not in the 'real' winner's
favour.

cancels
special
church
service
Before I go any further, I must
adrnit the 'real' winner was myself.
Having said that, 1 want to assure
you that this is not a "poor me" let-
ter. Hopefully, if nothing else, I'll
convince you of that. Enough said.
The contest winner was based on
audience applause: the most ap-
plause wins. Beyond -any shadow of
$ doubt I received the loudest and
/the longest applause. When the
winner was announced
(not ' me) we
weq shocked
and, along with 1
a large percentage
of the other pa-
trons, a Hate an-
gry. I then took it upon
myself to find out exactly what was
going on. So I went to tack to the
owner of the establishment.
During the course of our conver-
EXETER - Sunday's snow squall
cancelled a special ecumenical
church service that was to have
been held in Exeter.
A service for the Week of Prayer
for Christian Unity was to have
been held at Trivitt Memorial An-
glican Church at 7:30 p.m. The
guest speaker for the service, which
was also to have featured several of .,
the ministers from the South Huron
Ministerial, was to have been Rev.
Robert Wilson, .a professor at St.
Peter's Seminary in London.
But with poor travelling condi-
tions both for the guest speaker and
for parishioners, the organizers de-
cided to cancel the service.

sation he admitted to me that the
winner was decided because of
something that had happened .the
week before. And that, yes -I --
should have won. He even offerbd
me the equivalent of the first prize
money, which I refused. The mon-
ey wasn't the point. He then went
on to say that I would have my
chance to win next week or the fol-
lowing one, etc... Just what exact-
ly did that mean? To me, it meant
nothing for 1 won't be there. Not
next week. Not next month. Not
next year.
I am not a'poor loser', but I must
say that I would be a 'poor winner'
if the contest was fixed in my fa-
vour. In closing, I would like to
ask the owner of the bar a ques-
tion, "Haven't you heard the saying
- Don't bite the hand that feeds
you?"
