LUCAN - It was a typical all-star
game. Lots .of.offence and a few
surprises.
Saturday night: in front of a large
crowd, the West All -Stars doubled
the East All -Stars 8-4 in the annual
Southwestern Ontario Senior 'A'
Hockey League classic. The West
side was led by the Exeter repre-
sentatives who were in on six of
the west's goals.
A bit of a surprise in this contest
was the performance of West goal-
ie Kevin Luckhurst from Petrolia
who allowed just one goal in the
fust period to help his side to a 5-1
lead after 20 minutes.
Another surprise was Mohawks'
forward Dale Gibbon who admitted
after the game, he had trouble
catching some-of;thethaMyers

best, give out hard bodychecks.
''It's not aseasy to hit these=guys
because they skate a lot fatter,"
said Gibbon of the East players
who represented the Dunnville
Mudcats, Aylmer Hornets, Dor-
chester Dolphins and Ingersoll B's.
"The general tempo of the game
is not a lot of contact. 1 tried to
make as many hits but they weren't
coming as easily. If I take my in-
tensity to just hieing, I'm going to
lose the test of the game wdJall
behind."
Gibbon had two assists, Exeter
blueliner Corey McKee had a goal
and an assist, the line of Tim
Shields, Greg Snyder and Joe
Scherer all had a goal and two as-
sists. Goalie Rick Pikul and de -

the

fenseman Jeff Warren also played
well.
Also scoring for the winners
were Petrolia's Mark Whitlock with
two, Gary Cater also of Petrolia
and Strathroy's Steve Moffat.'For
the East, Ingersoll's Mike Hill,
Dorchester's Scott MacDonald and
Scott Cole and Dunnville's Joe Bu-
ote replied.
"I think we had the better goal .
scoring team. I was surprised it
wasn't a little bigger than it was,"
said Gibbon.
McKee, a rookie bluelirter with
the Mohawks, who is a former
Brussells Junior 'C' Bulls and Lis-
towel Junior 'B' Cyclones player,
got his goal in the second period.
He was not surprised the west
team won the game.
"I think we had more scoring .
punch than they •did. Once we got
five goals they laid down a bit."
McKee said in the all-star game
there wasn't as much holding and
grabbing of offensive players
around the net.
"In an all-star game if a guy has a
good scoring chance you let him
go."
There were a couple of featured
attractions during the game includ-
ing a skating race which saw Cole
Df Dorchester win. Also, just prior

Dunville's Glen Czepek was only
able to beat Pikul twice in five at-
tempts ,while at the other end,
Scherer was stopped four -of --five
times by Aylmer's Jamie Osborne.
Each team selected three stari of
the game and Mohawks' McKee,
Shields and Luckhurst of Petrolia
were the best from the west while
the east premier performers were
Dunnville's Geno Lostracco, Cole
and Osborne.

night's Western kn-

'B' hockey game
in St. Marys, there
'were 57 points between the
host Lincolns and their oppo-
nem for the night, the Strath -
my Blades.
Not much to get excited
about if you're a Lincoln, but
for a couple of players, no matter who's at the other end of the
rink, it's business as usual.
Forwards Steve DuBarry and Jason -Heywood, who have
been more than minor contributors to die Lincs are looking
forward to the rest of the season and the league playoffs.
Heywood admitted before the game, it's hard to get ready
for the struggling Blades.
"It's kind of tough. You have to be mentally prepared,
they're low in the pile (standings), Somebody like Sarnia,
you're ready for," said Heywood who had a goal and an assist
in the first period of a 7-4 win over Strathroy.
Ironically, the Lincolns newest arrival, Jason Glover was
playing against his old team, the Blades for the first time. Hc,
along with newcomer, defenseman Sean Oliver will help
make the ride to the finals a little easier.
The Lincs are enjoying one riff their best seasons ever and
have already passed their own record for wins in a season.
"I thought we'd have a good team. 'We picked up two guys.
We have good chemistry on our team, everyone gets along,":
said Heywood an Exeter Minor Hockey Association product.
While the dream of many junior hockey playersdis to go on
and play in the Ontario Hockey League, there are other ave-
nues ih which to pursue a hockey career.
"DuBarry, has fdund that avenue.
In the fall when I spoke with him, he said Colgate Universi-
ty in New York was interested in signing him to a scholar-
ship. Now, that has become a reality.
"In October we verbally agreed with them..wid 1 -went down
there for a weekend and saw the place. I got -everything on
paper a couple of weeks ago," said .the big winger who is
among the Lincs scoring leaders the past two years.
DuBarry started his junior career with the Exeter Junior 'D'
Hawks, then to Junior `B' with Georgetown, over to Tillson-
burg which became the Aylmer Aces and now he's in St. Mar-
ys.
That's a lot of different towns for a 19 year-old to go to and
a bunch of different schools. But hr's kept his grades up and
is looking forward to heading to Colgate next fall.
"My parents went up there this weekend. They are really ex-
cited about it."
DuBarry said the scholarship includes tuition, books, room
and board, in other words a full ride for the student -athlete
who plans on majoring in sociology. -
Although DuBarry skated in Friday's warmup, due to num-
bers, he did not play, but nevertheless he was prepared to take
on the Blades.
"Last night (Thursday) in practice, the coach said don't take
it too lightly. We can't go too offensive, we have to think of

EXETER - Joe Scherer's back-
hander with 59 seconds left in the
game helped the Exeter Mohawks
to their 16th win of the season Sun-
day night as they downed the Lake-
shore Winter Hawks 7-6.
Last night the Mohawks travelled
to Strathroy, looking for two more
points and a chance to take first
place,, away from the Petrolia Victo-
rians in the Southwestern Chuario
Senior 'A' Hockey League. •
Sunday, at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre, the MohaJoks

games in and win them all. "f;

"1 think we were taking there for
x;.granted a bit," said Scherer.
Although Exeter jtunped into a 1-
0 lead just 1:28 into the taunt, the.
Winter Hawks were up 3-1 after
Lythe first .period. Of the six goals
*netted by the visitors, duce of there
came when the trailing Lakeshore
player had lots of time to shoot the
puck past Rick Pikul.
"We weren't coming back and the
defence were having a hard time
passing it up and there were a few
giveaways. We played the way we
can in the third period," said Scher-
er.
"They (Lakeshore) had four guys
back, and three guys foreclhecking.
It was like they had seven guys out
there," said Exeter coach Dave
Revington.
Scherer's game winning goal,
which was his ninth multiple. goal
game of the season, saw Scherer

With the win, the Mohawks re-
main undefeated in 1993 as they
have six wink and a tic in their last
seven games. Sunday's game. with
the Winter Hawks and a return trip
to Lakeshore (Southampton) later
this month, fills a void in the
schedule created by the depurturc
of the Walpole Island Chiefs.
"We have to get all these games
in and win them all because Petro-
lia hasn't won in 1993," said Scher-
er.
Besides S goals at1d
one assist , Kevin
McArter, . Rob Kingshott, Greg
Snyder and Tim Shields scored for
the winners. Shields goal, which
tied the score 6-6 with less than
three minutes to play, came on a
shot which snuck in past Lang. on
what looked to be an impossible
angle.
After the game, Revington said
he didn't know what to think of the
.,Winter; Hawks since it is the first

son.
"I didn't know anything about
them. I know Petrolia beat them
12-1. We didn't think they would
be as good as they were," said Rev-
ington.

While Lantz went the distance in
net for the visitors, Exeter started
with Rick Pikul who allowed six
goals in two periods before being
replaced by Trevor Hunker.
Last Tuesday night in Exeter, the
Mohawks received goals from sev-
en different players.
Gord Brooks, Barry Bayrtbam,
Ron Goodhand, Richard Hawkins,
Greg Payne, Scott Pfaff and Scher-
er connected for the winners.
Hunter, although allowing only
duce goals, struggled all night and
