Exeter PCW EXETER - On Monday, January 11, Donna Webster conducted her first meeting as the new President of the Presbyterian Church Wom- en of Caven Church, Exeter. The committee .in charSe of the meet- ing, Bea Erman, Violet Ellis and Helen Bridges, conducted the de- votions. The theme was the thought that a new year brings an opportunity fora new start in life. Readings included the essay, "The Way Back". It told how Christian love and kindness helped to change a man's life from one of crime to one of faith and service. The treasurer, Helen Bridges, re- ported that the group had contrib- uted $2,425.00 for the mission work of the church around the world. The P.C.W. decided to support an appeal to the provincial govern- ment urging it to investigate ru- mours that immigrant women are being exploited by garment manu- facturers. It was reported that these women are being obliged to work for sub -standard wages and to work in unhealthy conditions. The group agreed to provide re- freshments for the Week of Prayer service to be held on Sunday, Jan - .eery 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Trivitt Me- morial Anglican Church. Other business included the deci- sion to make a donation to our choir for the purchase of music. Progress was reported on the project to provide a supply of indi- vidual cushions for the pews of the church. • • • • Lose weight with- out feeling hungry Medically screened Safe and easy weight loss Eat regular foods Nutritionally balanced diets ifufi«s.v SPECIAL 8 WEEKS for only '88 Expires Jan. 27/93 excludes product and enrollment fee vale, mart Pigs/ 235-3355 a 1. From our kitchen to yours By T.A. ghost writer HeavettlyDevine It is not really an odd time to be thinking about this veg- etable because in the space of about three to four short months it will be poking its shoots out of the ground and will be ready to eat in June. Actually, this particular vege- table was brought to mind when a radio commentator said that it had been imported into Canada 150 years ago last week. (I sometimes envy those people who can come up with these tidbits of information!) I suppose that I had never really thought about it be- fore, but assumed that it was a naturally occurring North American vegetable. It is a'very handsome plant with its huge green leaves and its red stalks, and would not be out of place as a background plant in a flower garden. The "pie plant", an odd name for a vegetable, but that is what rhu- barb is commonly called. It has been cultivated for centuries in Chi- na, mainly Mongolia, as a medicin4l plant and Marco Polo was the first European to write about it during his travels. From Mongolia, it spread throughout Europe and Nqrth America. Rhubarb is a perennial which grows from a thick root stock, send- ing out underground stems from which grow the long juicy stalks. It produces many seeds, but these will rarely.develop into a plant like the parent. The usual method of sdPildilifien is by root cuttings. Never eat Rhubarb leaves, as they contain oxalic acid and are very poisonous! The stalks are the edi4 part, and I was once told never to cut them, but always to twist an pull them so that the stalk separ- ates where it joins the stem. Rhubarb is delicious in pies, in jam or stewed and served alone or with ice cearn. (I can, remember as a little girl going opt to the gar- den with a dish of sugar, pulling off a stalk..dipping the end in the sugar and munching away!) It is one of the easiest things to freeze, simply wash it, cut it up, put it in a bag, and toss it in the freezer. To cook rhubarb. cut it into one inch pieces, put it in a pan with a small amount of water and cook over low heat. Sweeten to taste. (I put about 1/2 cup of sugar with about apound of rhubarb.) Some people like it sweeter than others, but whichever way you serve it it is a tas- ty. enjoyable: vegetable. The Coffee Break/Story Hour is a new program in Exeter, initiated WA co-ordinated by Clara Vanderlaan, to encourage women together in friend- ship to share ideas. Vanderlaan explains that the program is an inter -faith weekly bible study open to all women who do not work away from home. Mothers are wel- come to bring their children to participate in a story hour program. Infants and toddlers are looked after in the nursery by volunteers from the church. "the purpose of the program is to reach out into the community. It gives women the opportunity to'AtitoROW MOMS and study the bible," Vander - lean explains. She has been involved in Coffee Break/Story Hours for the past 14 years and this is the fourth program she has started during that time. Vanderlaan says that the group always welcomes new members and encourages wom- en to bring friends. She explains that the Book of Luke will be studied with a focus on its ap- plication to daily life. There is a study guide in place and group leaders use an inductive method to discuss the passages and offer guidance. "It's a low-key approach. There is no threat to women and we do not tell anyone what to believe," Vanderlaan says, adding that previous bible knowledge is not necessary to participate. The Coffee Break/Story Hour is scheduled for Tuesday mornings, 9:30 until 11:15 at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Huron Street West. 9 DELICIOUS COOKIES SAVE $2.29 BUY ONE DOZ - GET ONE DOZ.
