Hensall composting included in annual conservation awards DASHWOOD - The Village of Hensall was hon- oured Thursday evening for its dedication to the ideals of conservation by the Ausable Bayfield Con- servation Authority at their general meeting in Dashwood. Tom Proud, ABCA general manager, explained that Rensall was chosen for the award this year be- cause it proved itself "an environmentally thought- ful community". Proud referred to the village's recy- cling programs, . a .int collection day, but especially to the creation of a new composting facil- ity that drastically reduces the amount of landfill waste at the village's Usborne Township dump. Accepting the award on behalf of the village were reeve Cecil Pepper and clerk Luanne Phair. Other recipients of conservation awards at the meeting included David and Beth Ball of Adelaide Township for their work in reforesting their farm; the creation of windbreaks; and buffer strips and grassed waterways. Arnold Westlaken and family were honoured for improving windbreaks, fishery habitat and nesting boxes for wildlife on their Usbome Township farm. Van Loon Farms of Hibbert Township received an award for similar conservation work, including the planting of 36,500 tees, improving manure stor- age and the use of no -till farming. Jim Reeve, building official and drainage superin- tendent for Lobo Township received his award for his conscientious work with both the Ausable Bay- field and St. Clair Conservation Authorities. Bob Montgomery of CKNX television received his award for his coverage of conservation pro- grams and issues related to the Ausable Bayfield and Maitland Valley Conservation Authorities. "This isn't something someone gets for doing just sierie thing," said Prout of the awards, adding that conservation awards are presented to those who have shown years of dedication to improving their local environments. Tim Henry attended council January 11, not only asking for the agree- ment to be pushed back to June 30, but to see if he could have the loading zone moved as well. The large commercial building on Highway 21, which is now the new home of the liquor store, is awaiting other new tenants. Henry said one of those tenants wants the loading zone changed from the rear of the build- ing, to the front. "Why the change,?" asked councillor Ed Fluter. 1 would think loading from the front is not too sightly. Why not keep 11 at the back? Harry explained that a tractor trailer can not get around to the back of the building because it needs more room to maneuver then what is already there. 'The tenant has laid it out this way: I'm here on their behalf," said Hen- ry. He said curbs and pavement have already gone in around the back of the building and that would have to be removed to make room for large trucks.
