Politics, the weather, what your going to get for Christ- mas are all things which can not be predicted. In sports, you have one team that is better than the other. That is until the playoffs when things get a little spicier. But even then, there is always one which has the upper hand. On Saturday, Canada's junior hockey team won its third world championship in four years. Predicting theywould win the whole thing when the tournament first started was a tough thing to do. But the boys in red and white have proven over the past half decade they are superior when it comes to this annual tourna- ment. Predicting they will win is not a sure bet. But predicting Canada would beat Japan is something you can take to the bank. Year after year the Japanese continue to ice a hockey team for international competition. Why? Eventuallyiyou:have to come to the realization that its no fun getting your brains beat out. They never won a game in the tournament and they were humiliated most of the games they were in. Suggestion here guys, go back to the drawing board. • You have to wonder just how difficult it is to be a coach in -the National Hockey League. Toronto's Pat Bums just had to _make a very tough choice in which goalie to send down to the minors. The odd -man out is youngster Felix Potvin who was went to St. Johns. Grant Fuhr played well against the Blues on Saturday, too had _there wasn't enough scoring punch in front of him. Fred Groves • Football, foothall:and more football: lfyou are a junkie of the gridiron or just like to be a couch potato for an entire day, watch football. Cotton, Orange, Rose, Hall of Fame, Citrus Fiesta and:Blockbuster Bowl are just a few of the big games. How would you like to predict the winners of these? • I was going through the T -A archives the other day and came .across a few interesting tidbits...The July 16, 1980 edi- tion had a story:and photo of Biddulph Township's Sean Roo- ney. President was John Hope of.Lucan. secretary -treasurer was Sharon Haskett. On a baseball note, there ,are rumblings around town that there will be a midget aged team in Exeter this summer. If so, they will :probably. play in the Western Junior Baseball League which has midget, juvenile and.junior aged teams. • On a final note this week...I just want to wish Ray Lewis good luck. He's been a great help to me covering sports the last year or so and no doubt he will be missed by the sporting community. Ray tells me one of the first things -he's going to do when he heads to New York later this week is hit the ski slopes. I wonder if that will help his soccer game...I'm going to miss getting my [luck washed this spring -Ray.. Junior 'D' hock hocKes tlawNcs=tristh bafl , te a 3.3 draw By Fred ©roves T -A staff LUCAN - Hockey is full of dra- matics. A late goal, outstanding effort by a goaltender, all make up a good hockey game. That was the case Wednesday night at the Lucan Arena as the vis- iting Exeter Hawks battled to a 3-3 tie with the Lucan Irish in OHA Junior Development League action. Exeter, who saw their west divi- sion record dip to 12-9-1, led by a goal with just 21 seconds left in the game before Lucan forward Steve Moore collected his 19th goal of the season. The Hawks were playing with a man short and the Irish , yanked goalie Eoin McInerney for the ex- tra attacker so it was six skaters against four. - While Exeter veteran goalie Clint McCann who played very well, kept the Irish at bay all night, Moore beat him sending the game into overtime. McCann just looked up at the time remaining on the clock in a state of disbelief. In overtime, both teams skated hard despite already playing a quick 60 minutes. McInerney stoned Dan Irvine with 25 seconds left in the overtime period. Irvine came down one-on-one but McInerney made a huge glove save as the Hawks' rookie was try- ing to put it up high. "It wasn't a good game for us, we weren't aggressive. They wanted it more than us. Monday will be are interesting practice," said Irish coach Ken Needham. Senior 'A' hockey Mohawks tie best team By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - Despite tieing the best team in the South- western Ontario Senior 'A' Hockey League, the Exeter Mbhawks did not seem happy with their performance Sunday night at the South Huron Recreation Centre. In front of a very good sized crowd, the Mohawks led 4-0 but managed only a 5-3 deadlock with the league leading Petrolia Victorians. It .was the only non -win on the Vics record as they now sit at 18-0-1 while the Mohawks hold down sec- ond place in the eight -team loop at 11-4-1. Exeter came out very quick on Sunday and went up 1-0 when veteran winger Joe Scherer let. go with a snap shot which beat Kevin Luckhurst just 1:07 into the game. Continued on page 1 a solid 21-2-2 record. The hosts took a quick 1-0 lead when Paul O'Shea scored on a long shot. But the Hawks tied it up, sending 'the game into the first break even when Dave Dalrymple converted a nice passing play from newcomer Kurt Rapp and Ray Cousineau. Just two minutes intdihe"#toddle frame, John O'Hara gave the Hawks the lead and shorty after McInerney. took a few swings at Paul Manders. The duo, along with Lucan defenseman Chris Chater were all give four minutes for roughing. This was an aggressive game in which Dan Ryan was on the receiv- ing end of a pair of great Irish hits. One by Brian Schuyler which seemed to pump the Irish up a bit and later by Kevin Leitch. "We should have taken it to them all three periods. We let up in the first period because we thought we had them (beat)," said O'Shea. In his third year with the Irish, O'Shea got his second point of the night, late in the second period when he helped set up Jason Reid - head who scored on the powerplay. McCann had it, but it lust got past him. "I've had a really slow season. I'm not producing the points," said O'Shea who now has six goals and seven assists. The two teams have met twice al- ready this year and the Irish won both quite easily, 8-3 and 8-4. "When we beat them 8-3, I think they were better than that. They're tough and there's always that rival- ry," said Needham, Ile local rivalry continues on -Friday, January 13 when the Irish iravel to Exeter. Exeter made it 3-2 in the third pe- riod on a powerplay as Sean McCann teamed with O'Hara and brother Todd McCann. There was a lot of icing in 'the third period as neither team attacked offensively. "I think every year Exeter comes out and surprises us," said O'Shea. "They get together in mid-season." Lucan's Scott Riddell returned to the lineup after sitting out six weeks with an injury, he banged along the boards and had two as- sists. After the game, Exeter coach George Pratt said he would not comment on the game and added he was upset about the press coverage his team was receiving. "You can just write our scores,'' he said.
