"Ride Safe, Ride Sober"
Snowmobile accidents
can easily be avoided
-SUDBURY - Communities across Ontario are being urged to take up the
challenge this winter and help reduce the fatalities and serious injuries due
to snowmobiling accidents.
Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation Peter North and member`
of the Ontario Snowmobile Safety Committee have invited municipalities.
snowmobile clubs and the general public to get involved during the second
year of -the provincial "Ride Safe, Ride Sober". campaign.
Between 1988-89 and 1990-91. 113 people were killed and 1,316 in-
jured in snowmobile accidents across the province. Among recreational
activities, snowmobile mishaps rank second only to boating.
"Virtually all of these accidents were preventable," said North. "That's
what makes it is frustrating. By expanding the Ride Safe, Ride Sober cam-
paign. we will help community groups organize their own efforts so the
message of snowmobile safety can get out more effectively not only to the
Province's 300.040 regular snowmobilers but also to the occasional rid-
ers.
Alcohol and speed. either separately or in combination, are the two most
prominent contributing factors in snowmobile accidents.
The campaign's budget will be expanded from $50,000 to $125.000 in
1992-93. The Snowmobile Safety Committee is continuing its ongoing
public education program about uail safety. Sponsors for this year's cam-
paign include the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, the Ministry of
Transportation, the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs, the Addic-
tion Research Foundation and three snowmobile manufacturers: Yamaha,
Arctic Cat and Bombardier.
The committee has released a Community Action Kit to support the ef-
forts of local groups which want to launch their own snowmobile safety
programs. The kit contains information on how to plan and manage an ef-
fective .safety campaign and materials such as posters, brochures and fact
sheets.

velopment Branch of the Miw1Wry of Tourism and Recreation at (41(5)
