Juniors win a close one,
but seniors fall short
EXETER - For the second
straight game, the South Huron
junior boys' basketball team found
themselves in a very close contest.
Wednesday afternoon, guard
Brian McAllister scored with 28
seconds left in the game to give the
host Panthers a slim 42-40 win
over the F.E. Madhill Mustangs.
Two days earlier in Clinton, the
junior Panthers wcr •beaten 40-38
by the host Central Huron Redmen.
But on Wednesday, it was the
Panthers who were on the right
side of a close one as they saw
their Huron Conference record im-
prove to 1-2.
Against the Mustangs, South Hu-
ron led 20-19 at the half but the
visitors took the lead early in the
third quarter before Panthers' Ke-
vin Bierling drove across the base
line.
South Huron began making a lot
of mental mistakes including dou-
ble dribble, an over -and -back vio-
lation and crossing the line when
inbounding the ball.
With eight seconds left in the
third quarter, Jeremy Horne gave
the Panthers a five -point lead when
he grabbed a rebound and put it in
but Greig David hit a three -pointer
at the buzzer cueing the margin to
two points.
The lead exchanged hands in the
fourth quart^r and with 51 seconds
left in the game, Aaron Bayer came
up with a defensive rebound and
the Panthers' worked it in to McAl-
lister. He drove into the middle and
rolled the ball off his fingertips
which hit the front of the rim and
went in.
McAllister led the winners with
21 points while Home, who had a
great day on the boards, netted 13.
Missing two: Without starters
Ryan Stuart and Greg Agnew in
the lineup, the senior Panthers were
beaten 61-47 by visiting Madhill.
South Huron started this one
shooting the lights out as they hit
three three -pointers in a row. But
the Mustangs were •able to convert
on the fas'tbreak and led by a point
after eight minutes.
Panthers' forward Keith Craw-
ford had a great first quarter as he
blocked several shots and was
dominating on the boards.
In the second quarter, Mark Lynn
hit Crawford with a nice pass and
the passing seemed to click
throughout as Simon Disney con-
nected to Lynn and then it was
Crawford to Lynn.
Although Panthers' Mau Lierman
hit a shot with one second left in
the half, Madhill led 31-27.
South Huron managed to narrow
the gap to three points but without
Agnew and Stuart they seemed to
run out of steam. Coach Terry
O'Rourke was slapped with a pair
of technical fouls after he argued
with the officials and Madhill soon
hada 12 point lead.
Wayne Robinson led South Hu-
ron scorers with 12 points on four
three -pointers while Lynn added
11.
Last Monday in Clinton, Agnew
had 18 points and Crawford and
Robinson netted 12 each in a 64-58
win over the Redmen.
The Panthers will resume Huron
Conference action on Jan. 6 when
they host Seaforth.

Wilson returns to help Irish
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish got a
little added punch Wednesday
night as veteran Jason Wilson re-
turned to the lineup.
Wilson, now in his third season
with the Irish, scored one goal and
helped set up three others in a one-
sided 13-1 win over the visiting
Belmont Pests.
Saturday he had a a pair of goals
in a 9-1 win over the hosting
Northmiddlesex Stars and Sunday
added an assist in a 7-7 tie with the
Belmont Pests in OHA Junior De-
velopment League west division
action.
Since the hockey season began,
Wilson was playing with the Junior
'13' Strathroy Blades but decided to
return to the Irish.
"1 wasn't having any fun. Things
weren't working out so 1 decided to
come back to Lucan for the rest of
the year and have a good time,"
said Wilson.
The Blades have been struggling
and are in the basement of the

ter 40 minutes.
"We had a big talk before the
game and came out flying. We
came to play in the first period,"
said Todd.
Veteran forward Shayne Robin-
son paced the Hawks' offence with
four goals and three assists while
Sean McCann had four goals and a
pair of assists.
"The biggest point I made (be-
fore the game) was we had too
many guys just standing around,"
said Prau.
There were few standing still on
Friday as 13 different players
helped in the scoring.
Dan Ryan and John O'Hara each
had a pair of tallies with singles
from Paul Manders, Nick Szabo
and Ray Cousineau. Szabo set up
three goals while defenseman Ja-
mie Cornish also had a good game
with four assists.
After 21 games of a 40 game
schedule, the Hawks are in a five -
way battle for third place. The west
division standings are very, very
close.
"The league is so close right
now, we can't take anyone for
granted," said Pratt.
Three of the Hawks nine losses
this year have been by two goals or
less.
"There are so many games we
shouldn't have lost," said Todd
McCann.
Stars goalie Gerry Ellison was a
busy man Friday night as he faced
44 shots while at the other end of
the rink, Hawks' Clint McCann
who went two periods, and Kirk
Durand who finished off, saw 27
shots come their way.
Scoring for the Stars who arc

, fj
struggling to climb out of the base-
ment of the nine -team division
were Paul Woodburn, ex -Hawk
Nick Wieckowski, Chris Gingerich
and Kevin Leyten.
This game was a fairly calm one
a, referee Paul Petrie handed out
only one minor penalty per team in
the first period.
Hawks' Mark Lynn, although he
never threw a punch, was ejected
for fighting with Mike Bax in the
third period. About eight minutes
later, Ryan was ejected when he
squared off with Todd McPherson.
Not dressed for the Hawks on
Friday were defenseman Jason
McBride and Larry Lewis who
were replaced by Greg Dalrymple
and,Brian Gardner.

'A Grammies Night Before Christmas'

League's east division.
"1 was geuing enough ice time. 1
got along with all the guys on the
team."
Last year, Jeremy Jemec returned
to the Irish after a brief sunt with
the Blades. He is now with the Lis-
towel Cyclones. Steve Matthews a
forward with the Irish a year ago is
still with the Blades.
Lucan coach Ken Needham said
he doesn't even want to think about
trying to get Matthews and added
getting Wilson was not that easy.
"We had to struggle. They didn't
want to release him. It's (Junior 'B')
a lot different than guys think it is,"
said Needham.
Wednesday's opening period was
not very exciting as both teams
looked flat. The Irish did manage a
3-1 lead after 20 minutes on a goal
by Wilson and a couple off the
stick of Greg DePrest.
Lucan came out flying for the
middle period, scoring four goals
in six minutes. Ed VanKerkoerle
got his 12th of the season while
Derek Greenlee, Jason Glasser and
Paul O'Shea made it 7-1.
O'Shea got his second of the peri-
od while Jason Reidhead notched
his first of three on the night to
make it 9-1 after 40 minutes.
In the third, Reidhead, DePrest
and Andy Ross made it 12-1 just
5:53 into the third frame before Re-
idhead notched his first hat trick of
the year on an unassisted breaka-
way.
DePrest had a big seven -point
night while Glasser's goal was his
first since he connected back on
Nov. 8 against Alvinston.
With the return of Wilson, the
Irish have a good situation in
which they have three extra players
per game if everyone is healthy and
shows up.
Irish 9, Stars 1
Saturday night in Parkhill, the
Irish had a fairly easy time.
DePrest led the way with six as-
sists while VanKerkoerle and Wil-
son each had a pair of goals.
Also scoring were Jeff Stanton,
Sean Kaczmarek, Steve Moore, Re-
idhead and Chris Chater. Steve
Vandenberk teamed with Chris
Gingerich and Greg Muir for the
lone Stars' goal.
Irish 7, Pests 7
For once, the Irish had rouble
keeping the puck out of the net, in
fact this is the most goals Lucan
has allowed all year.
Moore had a pair for the visiting
Irish with singles from Jeff Stanton,
Jim Stanton, Kaczmarek and Derek
Greenlee. DePrest had a goal and
three assists.
Lucan led 6-3 heading into the
third period.
Lucky charms:...DePrest looks
as though he is headed for a 100 -
point season as the veteran centre -
man leads the Irish in scoring with
65 points...VanKerkoerle is the
leading defenseman with 14
goals...Lucan, whose record is now
20-2-1, will face the Alvinston Fly-
ers tonight in an 8:15 p.m. game....
