Thoughts on
Christmas
By Andrew Bannister
Grand Bend P.S. Grade 5
Christmas is the time of year
When children are acting so sin-
ce.
They want toys, and trucks, and
electric trains,
They can't have it all, so anger re-
mains.
So if you want a Christmas dear,
Be good all through the school
year.

Egbert the EIf
By Katie Seaton and Julie
Rooseboom
Hensall Public School
Once upon a time there was a
workshop at the North Pole. That
workshop belonged to Santa. It
was his toy workshop. All the
elves were working very hard on
different kinds of toys. Well all.the
elves were working hard except
one. Egben was the name of that
elf. All he did was sleep. One day
Santa came in unexpectedly and
found Egbert sound asleep in a toy
chair. Santa became very angry
and woke Egbert up. Santa told
Egbert that he would have to feed
the reindeer from now on! Egbert
didn't enjoy feeding the reindeer
because he couldn't sleep on the
job.
One day while Egbert was feed-
ing Cupid, a voice came out of no-
where. It was Rudolph! He said,
"You should ask Santa for your
job back and show him how hard
you work." "I don't know how to
work hard, I always fall asleep,"
whine Egbert.
"We will teach you to work
hard," answered Prancer. The next
day all the reindeer kept whining
and begging for food and they al-
ways wanted to go outside, Egbert
didn't go to sleep at all through the
day.
A couple of days later Santa
came to check on the reindeer and
saw Egben hard at work. Santa
asked Egbert if he wanted to come
back and work for him and Egbert
said "Yes". A couple of days later
Santa saw that Egben was always
hard at work. So Santa granted Eg-
ben one wish for anything at all.
Egbert wished that he could ride
with Santa Santa in the sleigh on
Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve
his wish came truc. Before they
left Egben thanked all the reindeer
for helping him to work harder.
Egbert the Elf was the happiest elf
in the world. From that day on he
worked hard all the time.

The Night Santa Broke
His Sack
By Jason McCann, Grade 4
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
One Christmas Eve Santa was
getting ready for his big night when
"Pop" the sack broke. "Oops," said
Santa. "Elves, get me a new sack!"
Santa ordered. "There's none left,"
answered the elves. "What!" yelled
Santa. "Put all the toys in the
sleigh. We're going to do without,"
said Santa.
"O.K., let's go, Rudolph. Out in
front," ordered Sant:: "Meep," went
Rudolph's nose. Then Santa called,
"Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet,
Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, Rudolph,
fly!"
On Christmas Tree
By Becky Hodder
Exeter P.S. Grade 7
Can you imagine a Christmas
without a Christmas tree? You
have the lights, curdles, presents,
holly, poinsettias but no tree.
Where would you put the Christ-
mas decorations or the tinsel?
That's why Christmas trees arc
very important. They can be,
scrawny or beautiful but as long as
they're Christmas trees it makes no
difference.
in order to have Christmas trees
someone has to grow them. That
person is a Christmas tree grower.
They arc very important in our
community even though some
people take it for granted. 1 don't
though. Back to the Christmas tree
growers. As I said they are very
important because Christmas trees
arc a custom.
There arc several stories . of
where the Christmas tree started,
but nearly 1200 years ago an Eng-
lish missionary named Winfried
travelled through Germany. One
day he found a group of heathens
at an oak tree near Gusman. They
were preparing to sacrifice little
Prince Asulf to the god Thor. Win -
fried stopped the sacrifice and cut
down "the blood oak. As the oak
fell. a young fir tree appeared. Win-
frld told the people that the fir was
the tree of life. representing Christ.
That was just one story, but ever-
greens began in ancient times. The
Romans exchanged green tree
branches for good luck on the first
day of January. The Elrglish took
this custom over for Christmas. The
Germans were probably the first to
use Christmas tree decorations.
They decorated their trees with
stars. angels, toys, gilded nuts and
candies wrapped in bright paper.
Later they added tinsel and lighted
candles. Scandinavians originally
trimmed their trees with fish nets
and little flags. Now they also use
Christmas cookies, apples, and gild-
ed nuts. People in Poland decorate
their trees with bright paper orna-
ments. and candles. In the United
States, early decorations included
homemade paper ornaments with
candy canes and strings of ,cranber-
ries and popcorn. Today many peo-
ple use shiney coloured balls and
strings of coloured electric lights.
No matter how you celebrate
Christmas make sure that a Christ-
mas tree is a strong part of your tra-
dition and remember to thank that
Christmas tree grower when he
hands you that beautiful tree!
