discus floodplain management
CREDITON - At a public meet-
ing in Crediton Thursday, Decem-
ber l0, Stephen Township residents
learned of floodplain management
issues relating to the Ausable River
in Crediton, tributaries of Walker
Drain, and the Centralia Drain in
Centralia. As a result of studies
completed by the ARCA or private
individuals, two zone floodplain
management policies have been es-
tablished for the Ausable River in
Crediton and the Centralia Drain in
Centralia. The two zone policies
recognize floodfringe areas of the
floodplain where development may
be permitted if structures are ade-
quately floodproofed.
The Conservation Authority is
presently requesting municipal sup-
port to revise the existing Fill, Con-
struction and Alteration to Water-
ways Regulation O.Reg 544/84 to
include new floodline mapping and

Regulation came into effect.
The public meeting was held at
the request of the Stephen Town-
ship'Council, who sent letters of in-
vitation to approximately 40 Ste-
phen township residents. Almost 50
percent of those invited attended
the meeting, along with municipal
councilors, t0 hear about flood-
plain management issues in the
three areas. A presentation by the
ABCA Water Resources Manager,
Alec Scott, included an overview of
floodplain management and re-
viewed current regulations - origi-
nally introduced in 1984 - which
apply to residents of Crediton and
those near the Wacker Drain
Grand Bend.
"Because of an increase in devel-
opment applications over the past
year, the councillors particularly
wanted Crediton residents to hear
about regulations for their area,"
says Kelly Prouse, Planner with the
Conservation Authority. "They also
wanted to t)c sure that complete in-
formation was available for inter-
ested individuals, including- maps
and copies of new floodplain man-
agement information for Centralia.''
People interested in building in
the defined floodfringe must obtain
the required permits from the Con
servation Authority and use appro-
priate floodproofing measures.
Following the meeting, chaired
by ARCA director for Stephen
Township, David McClure, a wide
range of questions from the audi-
ence dealt with the process of appli-
cation for development permits and
other concerns.
