SHIPKA - Boxing fans in the
area hoping to catch a glimpse of
Shipka native Joe Kaak Saturday
afternoon during CBC's coverage
of the Canadian Senior Boxing
Championships, came away disap-
pointed.
The Canadian Championships
were held in Stmtmerside, PEI De-
cember 3-6, but a major snowstorm
knocked out power to the region
for the first day. Organizers man-
aged to squeeze the fights into the
remaining three days, with the ex-
ception of one: Kaak's fight against
defending champion Dale Brown
of Calgary.
Because •the 81 kg, light -
heavyweight division had the most
competitors, n couldn't be complet-
ed.
The title fight has been pos,
poned until January, and although
Kaak and Brown each fought two
bouts in PEI, CBC chose to air_
only the championship bout in each
division rather than any of the earl)
round-robin fights.
"1 was a little disappointed they
didn't show some of my earlier
fights," said Kaak. "They pre-
viewed Brown and showed alt of
the Ontario boxers except me...
For Kaak, the wait means another
month of hard training, something
he had hoped to finally take a break
from. He now boxes out of the
East London Boxing Club. and also
spends much of his time travelling
for extra training in Detroit.
"I said to myself that after the
provincials in September, I would
take a couple of weeks off," saici
Kaak. "But after winning, I had to
start training nght away for the na-
uonals, so 1. promised myself; a
breakrihen."
.But because .ol. the postpone-
ment, Kaak -won't get a break at all,
even through Christmas.
"I haven't even been out for a
night with my friends since May.'
said Kaak. "But 1 can't quit now."
Should the Shipka native capture
the crown. he still won't get mucl.
rest. because the champion will be
off to Sweden for an exhibition
tournament in February.
Keak will definitely have his
work cut out for him though as he
takes his first shot at the Canadian
title. Brown is no slouch. in fact.
he has held the title for -the past six
years.
While Kaak doesn't like all the
. wailiug.i e -admits. it will.give him
some extra time to prepare, and
commentators Saturday were prc
dieting a good bout. Brown is
thought to be quicker, but Kaak ha'
the reputation of being a very hard
hitter.
"1 kgow he's quick, but they tell
me he e±tn't take a good hit," he said
with optimism. "So I'm going to
really concentrate on my speed and
footwork over the next few weeks.
and hopefully I'll tag him in Willie
Peg."
In Kaak's fust bout in PEI, he
scored a 12-7 decision over John
McCarthy of Nova Scotia in what
was described as a brawl.
In his second fight, Kaak faced
an experienced fighter in New
Brunswick's Mark Kelly. After an
even.first round, Kaak rocked Kelly
for two standing eight counts.
Not wanting to take anymore of
Kaak's bombs. Kelly spent.the third
round on wobbly legs just trying to
tie Kaak up.
Afternhree warnings by the refer-
ee for holding. Kelly was disquali-
fied from the fight. and Kaak dc-
clared the winner.
"An he .said to me afterwards
was, "Man, you hit hard" said
Kaak. •
Kaak and Brown will square off
as, an added card January 7 in Win-
nipeg, host site for the intennediait
champieaiships.
