LAMBETH - 11 you look at the
final scores, it was an unsuccessful
weekend for the Exeter Hawks, but
at a closer look it really wasn't that
bad tor the OHA Development
League team
They did come up shop against
the Lancers here Sunday, an 11-6
decision, and were nipped 6-5 by
the vistung Mitchell Hawks on Fri-
day, but look at the bigger picture
Exeter is now 11-9 and is in a
battle for third place in the west di-
vision
Suspensions have the locals very
shorthanded and in Lambeth they
had only 12 regular players suppli-
mented with five midgets
in Lambeth, Nick Szabo and ita
Cqusineau scored twice with sin-
gles to Sean McCann and Shayne.
Robinson. Midget iatllups Derek
Beckett, two assists; Greg Dalrym-
ple, Steve Farquhar, two assists,
and Brian Gardner played -well.
With veteran Clint McCann sus-
pended, Kirk Durand played in
both weekend games.
Mitchell 6, Exeter 5
Looking at what they gave, the
Hawks deserved more than what
they got in return Friday night at
home A goal with under three
minutes to go resulted in a 6-5
Mitchell win, but although the lo-
cals lost, they certainly weren't
beaten.
This time the Hawks found them-
selves without any help from their
younger affiliated players as the
RSD Generals were in Belmont for
their own game Friday. That left
the locals with only 13 skaters and
no back-up goaltender.
"I'm not disappointed with that
game at all," said Pratt. "Anytime
you get an effort like that you've
got to be happy."
Trailing 2-1 in the second, Sean
McCann made a nice effort to swirl
around the Mitchell net, deke two
defensemen and then find sniper
Dan Ryan who fired it home.
The Hawks then took a 3-2 lead
IN PRAISE OF MARIO
The year is 1989 and MARIO LEMIEUX had just finished scor-
ing 85 goals and assisting on 114 for 199 points and he figures he
has the M.V.P. wrapped -up. But as you know he didn't win.
WAYNE won it and MARIO was livid because usually the award
had gone to the scoring champion and the first all-star which MA -
RIO was that year. I remember at the awards dinner that MARIO
was almost in tears not from being unhappy but from rage. He said
"it's a strange league... they keep changing the rules from year to..
year
1 know it's.amazing to believe because of MARIO plays, but he
has only won the HART TROPHY (league M.V.P.).nnce and.that
was 1988. MARIO is on a mission this year. He wants to smash
WAYNE'S record of 215 points, set in 1986, and if he stays healthy
and that's a big if considering his back, he should do it. He's got
everything going tor hint.., the no -check rules that are in place this
year and it's 84 games this season and WAYNE did it in 80 games.
There's tour on four's now and you know how that opens up the
game for MARIO, and they've been calling a million powerplays.
The only downside for MARIO LEMIEUX is the injury to KEVIN
STEVENS, MARIO'S all-star left-winger.
My opinion is, that if the back holds up, (and that's a big if) he
should do it. There's no doubt that MARIO is a phenom when the
mood hits hurt: -Same games he looks like a man playing with a
bunch of boys, big, strong and just enough mean...ness to help hint.
His reach is unbelievable, 1 talk to some defensemen and they tell
me "1 got em all tied up and figure he can't go anywhere and the
puck is fifteen feet. from us and he flips it in the net." In a sense, he -
reminds me of JEAN BELI VERU. Everything JEAN did looked ef-
fortless. 1 would've liked to check JEAN and MARIO'S underwear
to see how wet it looked because they made everything look so easy.
MORE MARIO
MARIE LEMIEUX scored 43 goals in -1985 and won the rookie`
of the year and in the next year he scored 48 goals and so why I
would 1 say on HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA that he was a
FLOATER" Why? Because 1 knew that if he -really turned up the
burners he could score 60, 70 or even 80 goals easy. I often asked
when were those burners turned on?". and really can't tell but maybe
he Just said "hey, I'm going to prove who's the best." But I have a
suspicion it was while he was in the CANADA CUP when he saw
GRIE:TZKY show up every night.
The next question is. "HOW
WOULD MARIO DO AGAINST
THE PLAYERS OF THE PAST?" 1
firmly believe that MARI() would've
been a star in any era. Granted, he
wouldn't get 85 goals the way they
checked back then because they
would've had a guy on him like "white
on rice" and remember a was worth
your life to hesitate in front of the net
back in those days. But MARIO
would've stood out against anybody in
any era.
Hey', 1 can hear auim; of my grinder buddies saying "Hey
GRAPES, are you going to praise a guy Who dives like MARIO
does'.? I've got to admit that the dives bug me! really, they bug me
and the dives are beneath hurt, but the way he's chewing up the

Down 5-4 in the third period, Ex-
eter thought they caught a break
when referee Jeff Scott handed
Mitchell coach Jack Chaffe a bench
minor and awarded a penalty •shot
after a Mitchell player closed his
hand on the puck in the crease. But
Ray Cousineau hit the post on the
penalty shot and the Hawks failed
to convert on the powerplay.
Exeter pressed in the final min-
utes, but couldn't get the equalizer
Scoring for the Hawks were Cousi-
neau with two, Ryan, Barton and
Dan Irvine with singles. Durand
backstopped Exeter in goal and
turned in a fine performance facing
41 shots.

Lewis takes a pounding, again
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
LUCAN - Brent Lewis sat in the
Lucan Irish first aid room Wednes-
day night, wondering if he had a
sign on his forehead that said, "hit
mc."
Against the visiting Mitchell
Hawks, Lewis found himself on the
receiving end of a well-placed el-
bow from Eric Haefling with 4:10
left in the second period.
He was hurt badly and was re-
placed for the rest of the period by
Eoin McInerney and the two com-
bined to lead the Irish to a 3-1
OHA Junior Development west di-
vision win.
It was the second time in as
many games for Lewis that -he was
hit hard. Against the Alvinston Fly-
ers, he was charged by Jim Cloud.
"Everyone wants to hit me. Last
game (Alvinston), there was reason
for it. This time 1 didn't do any-
thing," said Lewis.
He wandered out of his net to_get
the puck and that's when Haefling
was given a five-minute checking -
from -behind penalty.
"I saw him coming, my head was
tumed."
Lewis and McInerney have
teamed up to be the best puckstop-
ping duo in the league, allowing
2.6 goals per game. It's a good bet
to say they'll both be on the west
division all -start team January 9 in
Thwnesford.
For the last two years, Lewis bas
been with the Creorgian College
Grizzlies in Barrie. Prior to that, he
was with the Junior D' Lainbeth
Lancers.
"You're .playing with guys 25 to
30 years old up there, Junior 'A'
players. I don't really miss it," said
Lewis, now a student at Fanahawc
College.
Funny goal: Veteran defense -
man Kevin Leitch scored the first
Lucan goal Wednesday on .the
powerplay when he let go with a
shot that hit Mitchell's beryl Bidt
right in the helmet and went in past
Dennis Scherbwrtlt.
In the second frame, Greg De -
Prost let go with a shot and line -
mate Steve Moore was right there
to pounce on the rebound.
After the same Moore said de-
fense was also a big part of
Weds aday's win.

Hawks back on Nov. 4.
In the third penod, both DePrest
and Jeff Stanton did a lot of work
behind the net to set Moore up with
his 13th goal.of.the season.
"I was in the corner and dumped
it.to Greg. 1 went to the net and no
one picked me up."
Although the game looked as
though the Irish were playing a de-
fensive style to keep the Hawks off
the board, Needham said they wer-
en't.
"We just wanted everyone to do
their job. These_was_no -defensive
plan," he said.
Everyone did their job including
defensemen Ed VanKerkoerle and
Keith Robson.
In the thud period. Mitchell's
Mark Ulch tried to cut up the mid-
dle but he was hit very hard by
VanKerkoerle. Later, Kory Dietz
was leveled byRobson.
Jason Glasser also gave out a
couple of hard checks but it was a
mistake on his part that resulted in
the Mitchell's lone goal. He retaliat-
ed after being on the receiving end
o[ a hit and was sent to the penalty
box.
A Luke Smith wrist shot Iron.
lugh in the slot got past Lewis.
Mitchell continued to turn it on but
the Irish kept the door shut and
picked up their 18th win in 20
starls.
