Clinton author's new book
features old Exeter rail station
By Adrian Harte
T -A Editor
CLINTON - A new book by a
Clinton author will feature the old
Exeter Railway Station among its
collection of photographs and his-
torical essays on Ontario's railway
stations.
Elizabeth Wiltmou of Clinton has
been a photographing railway sta-
tions since her father gave her a
camera for 'her twelfth birthday.
Since then she has published five
books, featuring her photographic
talents. Meet Me at the Station was
her first collection published m
1976, followed by Faces and Plac-
es Along the Railway in 1978. In
1979 she published a history of
firefighting in Ontario called
Where's the Fire?
Her newest work is called When
Any Time was Train Time and from
among the photographs of 40 rail-
way stations of Ontario, stretching
from Wiarton to Strathroy and from
Renfrew to Toronto, the Exeter sta-
tion is not only accompanied by a
historical description of the station
and the community it served, but
also includes the onginal architec-
tural drawings for the building.
Currently, the old Exeter station,
once the transportation hub of the
community and a symbol of the
toWn's entry into the modern era,
stands virtually forgotten at the cast
edge of town. Some communities
have restored and renovated their
old stations, and Willmott says she
hopes that plans to save Exeter's
station will eventually come to frui-
tion.
Willmou also says that under all
the years of accumulated grime and
use as a storage shed, there is prob-
ably a very attractive building. The
architectural drawings not only
show the vertical board and batten
trim on the station's upper half, but
also suggest that under the asphalt
shingles covering the lower half arc
brick walls.
The Exeter station is one of the
last such buildings left standing on
the old Huron Bruce rail line.

EXE 1ER - The Exeter OPP in-
vestigated several accidents during
the past week, most of them minor
in nature.
On Saturday, the vehicle of Gold -
win Atkinson of St. Marys slid off
County Road 6 in Usbome Town-
ship, striking a utility pole. Atkin-
son was taken to St. Marys Hospi-
tal by a friend for treatment of
minor injuries.
Also on Saturday, vehicles driven
by Leanne Stapleton of RR3 Exeter
and Allan McKnight of Exeter col-
lided on Highway 83 in Usbornc.
Damage to both vehicles was de-
scribed as moderate by police.
OPP seek
tips to help
with break-in
cases
EXETER - The Exeter OPP are
investigating two break-ins in the
past week and are seeking any in-
formation members of the public
might have to assist with their in-
vestigations.
On Friday, police say a residence
in Usbornc Township near High-
way 23 was broken into while the
family was away during the day.
Stolen was an RCA 20 -inch televi-
sion (aerial #72922029), a Sony
VCR (serial #0911944), and an
RCA 8mm camcorder (serial
#104440107).
Last Monday, Continental Pro-
duce in Zurich was broken into.
The OPP report damage to the of-
fice files as the culprits ransacked
the premises. Stolen were cash,
tools, two briefcases, and a Cros-
man air pistol (.357 replica).
Also the OPP report that between
November 28 and December 1, a
yellow 1976 Yamaha dirt bike,
model DT100, was stolen from a
Stephen Township residence.

Grand Bend signs
called 'unsightly'
GRAND BEND - Signs, signs everywhere signs.
Although that was a line to a hit song a few years back, council
members in Grand Bend are not singing a happy tune when it comes
to signs in their village.
On a recent walking tour of Plan 24, a portion of the village which
has a high density of cottages, councilors noticed a waste of money
when it came to their signs.
"It was an obvious waste of material in our signage. It makes it so
unsightly," said councilor Bill Uniac.
The village's Parking and Law Enforcement originally suggested
that council approach the Public Utilities Commission and asked
them if the signs on Oak Street could be posted on the hydro poles.
This was amended Monday night to see if the PUC would allow
the village's signs to be posted on poles throughout the village.
"Anywhere we can put a sign on a pole and save money, I'm all
for it," said councillor Ed Fluter.
Poles have not been used in the past for sign posting because line-
men used to climb the poles with the aid of spikes but now they used
bucket trucks.
Mark your outdoor decorations
EXETER - The town police are
asking homeowners to put some
identifying marks on their outdoor
Christmas decorations after receiv-
ing two complaints of decorations
being stolen in the past week on
Eastern Ave. and on Andrew St.
Police say identifying marks will
make it easier to establish owner-
ship if the items are recovered.
Friday evening, police investigat-
ed a traffic accident at the intersec-
tion of Main St. and Church St. Po-
lice say Justin Turnbull of Grand
Bend was exiting onto Main St.
when his car was struck by a vehi-
cle driven northbound by Darryl
Beaver of Exeter. A passenger in
the Beaver vehicle was treated at
South Huron Hospital for injuries.
Police say Highway Traffic Act
charges are pending in the case.
On Saturday, police were called
to a three car accident, again at
Main and Church Streets in which a
northbound car driven by Ronald
MacDonald of Goderich rear-ended
another northbound car driven by
Douglas Erb of Zurich. The Erb
vehicle then collided with a south-
bound car driven by Milton Keller
of Exeter. Damage was moderate
and there were no injuries. Police
say weather was a major factor in
the accident.
