Rec staffs are concerned
about alcohol managment
EXETER - Nearly 100 recreation directors and arena
managers .from across Southwestern Ontario gathered
at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter last
Tuesday, many wanting to know more about their re-
sponsibility when it comes to serving alcohol.
The one -day event was the Zone One meeting of the
Ontario Recreation Facilities Association.
Although the local rec centre does not have any spe-
cific regulations in place, Mike Soidan, Chairman of
the local rec board, said it won't be long.
'It's time South Huron Rec Centre had its policy put
into place. We've been working towards this."
Lynn Prentice from the Addiction Research Founda-
uon was the guest speaker on Tuesday and she provid-
ed a lot of information including the importance of
having staff participate in the Server Intervention Pro-
gram
Soldan, who said he did not expect such a large turn-
out for the meeting, said it was like a professional de-
velopment day for recreation people.
"We went through some alcohol policies from one of
the communities to the north. It gave a good outline of
their management policies."
The rec board has been working on setting up a poli-
cy which would require anyone who rents the hall or
the agricultural building and has 'a 'liquor license, to
abide by the rules set out by the rec board,
"As representatives of the rec centre, if we see peo-
ple abusing the policy, we won't hesitate to call the po-
lice. We would give the users fair warning;" said Sol-
dan.
